No. 15 TexAnns Power Past Lady Mustangs

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Following a tight first set, No. 15 Tarleton State University broke loose after that holding the Western New Mexico University volleyball team to just 22 points over the final two sets on their way to taking the 3-0 victory (22-25, 9-25, 13-25) Saturday night in Lone Star Conference action.

WNMU (5-13, 5-5 LSC) was right there early on, trading points with the top team in the conference. After the TexAnns (17-4, 9-1 LSC) claimed the first set, there was no stopping them. TSU hit .429 for the match, including an impressive .727 in the final set.

Senior Kalie Lyle (Phoenix, AZ/Sandra Day O' Connor) led the Lady Mustangs with eight kills, while senior Kelli McGhiey (Pearl City, HI/Sacred Hearts Academy) added seven. Sophomore Cristal Carrizoza (Phoenix, AZ/North) dished out 20 assists, while on defense senior Ashley Mataele (Laie, HI/Kahuku) collected 13 digs and senior Heather Verrill (Barstow, CA/Barstow) sent back seven blocks, with two solo stops.

The TexAnns had the early 6-2 lead in the first set, but WNMU answered with a 2-0 spurt with Watt and Verrill collecting points to leave the deficit at one. Still down three at 10-7, Lyle started another 3-0 run, as after a pair of TSU errors the set was even at 10. The Lady Mustangs even took the lead a pair of times, first at 14-13 on a solo block by Verrill and then at 16-15 on a double-block by McGhiey and Verrill. Following a kill by Lyle to tie the set at 17, the TexAnns reeled off four of the next five points for a 21-18 advantage. WNMU made one final push with McGhiey tallying a kill and then a block by Verrill and Watt had the deficit back to just one at 22-21 when TSU went on to score three of the final four points for the 25-22 first set win.

Set two had WNMU holding a small 5-4 lead after Verrill and Carrizoza combined for a block. After that, the TexAnns went on a run of all runs posting a 12-0 spurt to move out to a 16-5 lead. TSU wouldn't let up after that, outscoring the Lady Mustangs 9-4 over the remainder of the set for the 25-9 second set win and 2-0 match lead.

Verrill and Lyle claimed points for WNMU early in the third set, but the TexAnns just kept coming, as they were quickly in front 7-3. A service error had the Lady Mustangs back to within four at 10-6 and as it turned out, that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way. TSU won five of the final six points for the 25-13 third set win and 3-0 match victory.

TSU tallied 53 kills to just 11 errors in 98 chances to post their .429 hitting percentage. WNMU had 25 kills to go along with 17 errors in 96 chances to hit .083. The TexAnns also held the edge in service aces (2-1), blocks (9-7), assists (49-25) and digs (49-31).

Adriana Darthuy led TSU with 15 kills and hit .379. All-American Hailey Roberts added 14 kills and a .385 hitting percentage, along with 11 digs and two blocks. Fellow All-American Jordyn Keamo continued her all-around game as a setter as she dished out 33 assists, tallied seven kills in eight chances, collected eight digs and sent back four blocks. Adrianna Knutson led the team with 14 digs and Hannah McManus had six blocks, with one solo.

WNMU will now prepare for a lengthy road trip this coming week, as they will play at UT Permian Basin on Wednesday starting at 7 p.m. Central Time. They will continue the road swing on Oct. 21 at Texas A&M-Kingsville and then close the trip on Oct. 23 at Eastern New Mexico.
