No. 11 Lions Use Big Second Half to Pull Away from Mustangs

COMMERCE, Texas – Redshirt senior Dominic Barry (Moreno Valley, CA/Vista Del Lago) posted a pair of sacks, along with eight total tackles, as the Western New Mexico University football team ran into a buzz saw Saturday as No. 11 Texas A&M-Commerce rolled to the 52-3 Lone Star Conference victory.

Outside of Barry's strong game, senior Justin Harris (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) rushed for 75 yards and senior Matt Hommel (Suffolk, VA/Kings Fork) passed for 118 yards and rushed for 36 more yards. Luis Perez powered the Lions (5-1, 3-1 LSC) completing 22-31 for 345 yards and five touchdowns.

Texas A&M-Commerce struck right out of the gate, as they recovered the on-side kick and later connected on a 27-yard field goal for the 3-0 lead four minutes in. After WNMU (1-6, 1-4 LSC) tallied a first down and then had to punt, the Lions quickly turned their next drive into points on a 48-yard TD pass for a 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

The Lions held the Mustangs on the ensuing drive and made it three straight drives with points on a 16-yard TD pass to open the lead to 17-0 with just under five minutes to play in the opening quarter.
After that, the WNMU defense kept the high-powered Lions in check and the offense began to move the ball. Hommel picked up a first down on fourth-and-nine when he rushed for 20 yards down to the Lions 17. However, the drive would later stall and a fourth-and-11 pass fell incomplete to turn the ball over on downs.

As the teams kept trading possessions, WNMU closed the scoring right before the end of the half when junior Collin Grady (Glendora, CA/Glendora) drilled a 39-yard field goal to leave Texas A&M-Commerce with a 17-3 lead at the break.

Texas A&M-Commerce then put the game away in the third quarter, tallying 21 points, converting a pair of turnovers into 14 points along the way, as they had a 38-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter. A touchdown pass and a blocked punt returned for a score closed the scoring giving the Lions a 52-3 victory.

WNMU outrushed the Lions 108-39, while the Lions held the 378-123 edge through the air. Turnovers were also a story with the Mustangs committing four to none for the Lions.

Redshirt senior D'Angelo Bowie (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) returned for WNMU and caught three passes for 36 yards. Senior Evan Beebe (Chula Vista, CA/Mater Dei Catholic) was also back as he caught four for 25 yards. Junior Jelani James (San Diego, CA/Olympian) added two catches for 29 yards.

Sophomore Nolan Grigsby (Los Angeles, CA/Crenshaw) added six tackles, a half tackle for loss and three pass breakups. Senior Leo Marin (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad) added a sack.

For the Lions, Darrius Webb rushed for 54 yards, while D'Arthur Cowan caught four passes for 87 yards and a touchdown. Buck Wilson added two catches for 76 yards and two scores. On defense, Yusef Sterling-Lowe, Neema Behbahani and Brent Walker all had four tackles. Kieston Carter tallied 1.5 sacks.

WNMU will return to action next Saturday when they will host Fort Lewis in non-conference action starting at noon.
