Hot-Shooting Falcons Power Past Lady Mustangs

SILVER CITY, N.M. – UT Permian Basin connected on 17 three-pointers Thursday night to down the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team 97-61 in Lone Star Conference action.

The 17 three-pointers by UTPB (6-11, 3-8 LSC) is a new high mark for a single team in a game this season in the conference. Not only that, they were accurate nearly making 50 percent of their attempts (17-35).

WNMU (4-14, 0-11 LSC) did their best to try and counter the attack, with senior Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) going for 23 points and junior Keshaun Clark (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria) adding 10 points. Gutierrez was effective from the field making 7-14, 8-9 from the line, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Sophomore Megan Looney (Phoenix, AZ/Apache Junction ) brought down a team-high six rebounds. Redshirt junior Taimane Passi (Honolulu, HI/Iolani), playing her first game this season after participating on the WNMU volleyball team, made an impact going for four points and added a steal.

Gutierrez tied the game just over two minutes in when she hit a jumper in the paint to knot the game at two. Looney re-tied the game at the 6:07 mark when she hit a jumper off the fastbreak. The Lady Mustangs utilized fastbreak points throughout the first half, as they were able to break the Falcons' full-court press on several occasions.

Clark hit a jumper to help bring WNMU back to within one and after a Botelho fastbreak jumper near the midway point of the opening quarter made it a 10-8 game, the Falcons began to take over.

Sierra LaGrande dialed long distance on the next trip down for UTPB to help them end the first quarter on an 18-9 run to open up a 28-17 lead.

Clark began the second quarter hitting a jumper in the paint off the fastbreak, just to watch the Falcons continue their hot shooting. They countered with a 7-0 run to jump the lead to 16.

Senior Jayla Brown (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista ) hit a three-pointer and another jumper by Clark in the paint had the Lady Mustangs back to within distance down 10 with 3:52 to play in the first half.

UTPB added five points to their lead from that point on to hold a 46-31 lead at the break.

Just like the start of the second quarter, WNMU opened the scoring in the third with a jumper nine seconds in. UTPB then really took off, as they ended up scoring 35 points in the third frame. A 15-0 run started right after Botelho's jumper opened the quarter to help the Falcons put the game out of reach.

Outside of the scoring games from Gutierrez and Clark, Brown added nine and Looney with eight.

UTPB was led by 18 points from Niva Taito, as all of her points came on six three-pointers. Briana Cato and LaGrande added 15 apiece, while Jackie Perez tallied 11 and Heather Crittenden nearly had a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

UTPB really couldn't miss almost anywhere on the floor as they made 32-63 (51) and 16-21 (76) at the foul line. WNMU answered with 21-62 (34), 2-13 (15) from three and 17-20 (85) at the charity stripe.

WNMU led on points in the paint (28-26) and fastbreak points (18-9). UTPB held the edge on points off turnovers (20-13), second-chance points (14-9) and bench points (42-12).

It won't get any easier Saturday afternoon when the Lady Mustangs will welcome in West Texas A&M starting at 2 p.m. The Lady Buffs handed Eastern New Mexico their first conference loss of the season 62-52 earlier tonight.
