Midwestern State Starts Early and Never Looks Back Against Lady Mustangs

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Backed by solid all-around shooting, rebounding and points in the paint, Midwestern State University took an early lead and held it the rest of the way in defeating the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team 71-46 Thursday night in Lone Star Conference action.

MSU (4-9, 1-6 LSC) shot 50 percent in the first half and ended up making 41 percent (26-63), 31 percent from three (8-26) and 11-19 (58) at the foul line. Rebounding was big as they collected 51 to 35 for WNMU (4-10, 0-7 LSC). Points in the paint also favored Midwestern State at 30-14.

Senior guard Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) did what she could in trying to keep it close for the Lady Mustangs as she went for a team-high 20 points, along with three rebounds, four assists and four steals in playing all 40 minutes. Senior guard Kenzie Rinehart (Deming, NM/Deming ) added seven points, while sophomore forward Megan Looney (Phoenix, AZ/Apache Junction ) grabbed nine rebounds, to go along with six points. Junior Keshaun Clark (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria) hit the boards hard from her guard position collecting eight.

It was a tough shooting night for WNMU as they made just 17-63 (27) from the field, 2-19 (11) from three and 10-15 (67) at the foul line.

Gutierrez got WNMU going 46 seconds in with a jumper to tie the game at two. After that, Midwestern State got on a roll scoring the next six points for an 8-2 lead. That didn't stop the Lady Mustangs from answering right back as they reeled off the next seven points to take their first lead of the game. Gutierrez started the spurt with two from the line, then Looney hit two at the line before senior Jayla Brown (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista ) dialed long distance for the 9-8 lead near the midway point of the opening quarter.

MSU responded closing the final five minutes on a 11-4 run to take a 19-13 lead into the second quarter.

Midwestern State ended up outscoring the Lady Mustangs in all four quarters.

A pair of early baskets by Gutierrez in the second quarter each time trimmed the deficit back to six. Just when it seemed WNMU was starting to make their move, Midwestern State answered back and never took their foot off the gas.

MSU ended up outscoring the Lady Mustangs by 11 over the rest of the first half to take a 40-23 lead into the locker rooms.

Gutierrez and Rinehart started the second stanza strong hitting back-to-back jumpers to trim the lead to 13.

Following a Gutierrez foul shot at the 7:18 mark of the third quarter to leave the lead at 14, Midwestern State just kept coming and would push the lead into the 20's, taking a 62-39 lead into the final quarter.

Both teams struggled over the final 10 minutes with MSU holding the 9-7 scoring edge.

Whitney Taylor paced MSU with 21 points, making 7-14 from the field, including 5-10 from long range. Liz Cathcart was close to a double-double with eight points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Avery Queen was second in scoring with 14 points.

WNMU did well in the turnover area holding a 13-9 points off turnovers advantage as they forced 14 while committing just 11. Fastbreak points were also close at 13-9 in favor of MSU.

The Lady Mustangs will remain at home this coming Saturday when they will host Cameron at 2 p.m. inside Drag's Court. The Aggies lost in a high-scoring affair at Eastern New Mexico 84-76 earlier tonight.
