SILVER CITY, N.M. – Metro State University Denver came out and piled up 21 runs on their way to taking two from the Western New Mexico University softball team on Sunday. The Roadrunners claimed the first game 12-0 in five innings and then 9-1 in the finale in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
MSU Denver (21-11, 16-4 RMAC) scored in every inning in the opener to take the run-rule victory. Cassidy Smith limited WNMU (16-19, 12-8 RMAC) to just three hits. The Lady Mustangs got their hits from junior
Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) in the first, redshirt freshman
Brooklyn Misenhimer (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) in the second and later a double by Misenhimer in the fifth.
The Roadrunners scored three runs in each of the first two innings and then two runs in each of the final three innings. Colissa Bakovich tallied three hits to lead MSU Denver, while Smith had four RBI.
Smith picked up the win (7-7) in the circle for MSU Denver going all five innings and allowing three hits. Redshirt junior
Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) started and ended up with the loss (10-9) after pitching the first 2.2 innings and allowing six runs, five earned. Freshman
Tiana Salazar (Peoria, AZ/Peoria) went the last 2.1 innings.
In the second game, the Roadrunners scored five runs over the first two innings to open a 5-0 lead. After plating two more in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead, WNMU was able to get on the board in the sixth.
Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and sophomore
Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) began the inning with back-to-back singles. After two outs were recorded, Misenhimer continued her solid hitting day with an RBI single to left.
MSU Denver brought in two more on a pair of solo home runs in the seventh to claim the 9-1 victory.
The Roadrunners held a 10-5 edge on hits, with five Lady Mustangs collecting a hit. Three Roadrunners had two hit games, while Sarena Espinoza and Smith drove in three apiece.
Hayley Fields grabbed the win (13-3) for the Roadrunners going all seven innings and allowing just the one earned run. Senior
MaryJo Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) took the loss (1-7) for WNMU also tossing a complete game and all nine runs were earned.
WNMU will hit the road this coming weekend as they will play in a pod in Colorado Springs against UC-Colorado Springs and Colorado Christian.
