LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Shooting a sizzling 50.9 percent from the field had the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team with a halftime lead over Colorado Christian University. The Mustangs kept the shooting up in the second half before the Cougars were finally able to take over late to claim the 92-78 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win Friday.
WNMU (1-22, 1-17 RMAC) connected on 29-57 from the field, 8-17 (47) from three to keep pace with the also hot shooting Cougars (14-10, 10-8 RMAC) who made 32-65 (49), 10-24 (42) from three.
Freshman
Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air ) provided an immediate spark off the bench as just after he entered nearly five minutes into the game he hit a triple and then was fouled attempting a three hitting the foul shots to move the Mustangs to a 14-8 lead at the 13:26 mark.
CCU came back to push their advantage to four a number of times when freshman
Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy ) stepped back for his own deep ball at the 4:46 mark to move WNMU back in front, 29-28. Junior
Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) closed the half strong with an offensive rebound and put back to end the half with WNMU in front, 40-37.
The Mustangs held the lead throughout the first 10 minutes of the second half. Senior
Makhtar Fall (Morocco/Ecole Al Jabr) hit on a layup to move the lead to five nearly three minutes in. Junior
Brandon Williams (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep) had the advantage back to five a few minutes later when he converted a transition layup.
After the Cougars made a quick run to move in front by three, Loucks and sophomore
Marcus Weeks (Yuma, AZ/Yuma) hit back-to-back layups to push WNMU back in front at 59-57 with 10:36 to play in the game.
Zach McLemore and Jeremiah Hanson drilled three-pointers on the next two Cougar possessions to put them in front the rest of the way. It ended up being a 10-0 run following Weeks' layup that had CCU with the eight-point lead.
The Mustangs would get no closer than seven over the final seven-plus minutes.
McCray led the way with 20 points, going 7-13 from the field. Loucks posted 16 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Junior
Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon) and Enriquez each tallied 10 points. Enriquez tied Loucks for the team-high in rebounds with six.
Ty McGee went for a game-high 26 points to lead the Cougars. He added 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. Andre Lane came off the bench to tally 20 points, going 6-8 from long range.
With the win the Cougars have now won seven-straight.
Turnovers plagued the Mustangs as they had 19 and that led to the Cougars holding a 25-11 points off turnovers advantage.
WNMU will play at Colorado School of Mines tomorrow (Saturday) night beginning at 7 p.m.
