Basketball Set for Final Road Trip of Regular Season

LAKEWOOD/GOLDEN, Colo. – The final road trip of the regular season awaits the Western New Mexico University basketball teams this weekend as they will play Colorado Christian University and Colorado School of Mines.

On the women's side, the Lady Mustangs are 8-15 overall and 5-12 in the RMAC. They posted a win in their last game over Northern New Mexico College. Junior Desiree Smith (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union ) leads the team averaging 10.3 points per game. Junior Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) adds 9.9, while sophomore Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) tallies 8.9. Smith also leads the team in assists (74), steals (46), free throws (58) and minutes per game (30.8). Gutierrez leads in three-pointers with 42. Botelho has a team-high 10 blocks, while junior Deandra Williams (Rosenburg, TX/Terry ) brings down a team-high 6.3 rebounds per contest, while adding 7.3 points. WNMU averages 57.9 points per game and allows 65.5. They make 36 percent from the floor, while opponents connect on 41 percent.

The Lady Mustangs enter the week four games back of the final RMAC Tournament spot with five games to play.

WNMU will open the week on Friday night against Colorado Christian at 5 p.m. The Cougars are 15-6 overall and 12-5 in the RMAC. They have split their last four games, defeating South Dakota Mines and Chadron State, while falling to Black Hills State and Regis. CCU is just one game back of tying for the top spot in the RMAC.

Kate Louthan leads the offense averaging 13.8 points per game. She also brings in 7.1 rebounds. Claire Paxton adds 11.6 points and 5.2 rebounds. Ali Meyer leads the team in rebounds at 8.7 per game and adds 9.3 points. CCU averages 70.24 points and allows 60.19 points. They make 43 percent from the field and allow 35 percent.

Earlier this year CCU took the 74-54 win over WNMU in Silver City on Jan. 2.

The Lady Mustangs finish the week on Saturday against Colorado School of Mines at 5 p.m. The Orediggers at one point were 11-0 in RMAC play before dropping a home game to CSU-Pueblo. They are currently 16-5 overall and 14-3 in the RMAC, tied with CSU-Pueblo and Black Hills State for first in the conference. CSM snapped a two-game losing streak on Saturday with a win over Chadron State. Prior to that they lost to Black Hills State and Regis.

 Laura Tyree leads the team averaging 11.3 points, while Courtney Martin adds 11.2. Emily Bailey is also in double-figures tallying 10.0. Martin leads the team in rebounds pulling down 6.6 per game. They average 62.5 points per game and allow 58.8. They make 38 percent from the field and hold teams to just 34 percent.

The Orediggers rallied late to defeat WNMU in the earlier meeting this season in Silver City, 58-57, back on Jan. 1.

On the men's side, the Mustangs nearly defeated Westminster before Jordan Pryor hit a three-quarter court game-winner. WNMU is 1-21 overall and 1-16 in the RMAC. Freshman Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy ) remains the point leader in his first season averaging 10.6 per game. He also leads in steals with 26 and free throws with 83. Junior Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon) adds 9.7 points, while junior Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) posts 9.3 and senior Adams Kesler at 8.9. Range and Loucks lead the team in rebounds at 5.2. Junior Brandon Tanter (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep) leads in assists with 33. WNMU averages 68.2 points and allows 81. They make 38 percent from the field and opponents connect on 45 percent.
The Mustangs will open the week on Friday at 7 p.m. against Colorado Christian. The Cougars are 13-10 overall and 9-8 in the RMAC and are currently on a six-game winning streak. They have moved to within a game of the final RMAC Tournament spot. During their winning streak they have defeated Western State, CSU-Pueblo, Black Hills State, South Dakota Mines, Chadron State and Regis.

Zach McLemore pours in a team-high 16.2 points, followed by 14 from Wayne McCullough and 13.1 from Ty McGee. McGee leads the team in rebounds at 7.5 per game. They average 81.9 points and allow 81.2. They make 47 percent from the field and opponents connect on 46 percent.

The Cougars took the first meeting earlier this season in Silver City, 89-66, back on Jan. 2.

To close the weekend on Saturday night at 7 p.m., the Mustangs will play Colorado School of Mines. The Orediggers are 17-6 overall and 12-5 in the RMAC and are currently on a five-game winning streak. They are within two games of Fort Lewis for the top mark in the conference. During their winning streak they have defeated Western State, South Dakota Mines, Black Hills State, Regis and Chadron State.

Gokul Natesan leads the team averaging 21.1 points per game. Adam Laine adds 11.3 per contest. Caleb Waitsman grabs down a team-high 6.6 rebounds. They average 79 points per game and allow 70. They made 48 percent from the field, while opponents are at 43 percent.

In the earlier meeting this year the Orediggers took the 79-72 win back on Jan. 1 in Silver City.
