SILVER CITY, N.M. – Getting to play in their first home match of the season, the Western New Mexico University women's tennis team took control early and never looked back in cruising to the 9-0 victory over Eastern Arizona on Wednesday.
In doubles, WNMU (1-3) cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 2 with redshirt sophomore
Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado )/senior
Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) picking up the win. Senior
Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio )/junior
Annely Heinze (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Techologico de Monterrey) grabbed an 8-2 win at the top flight. The Lady Mustangs won the third point at No. 3 by forfeit.
In singles, Heinze at No. 5 and Morrill at No. 6 each won by convincing scores of 6-0, 6-0. Senior
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) at No. 1, Osuna at No. 2 and junior
Gemma Goodland (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/Maribyrnong College Sports Academy) at No. 3 all posted 6-1, 6-3 straight set wins. The Lady Mustangs picked up the final singles point at No. 4 via forfeit.
WNMU will now have some time off before returning to action on Feb. 25-28 when they will head to California to play four teams.
