MESA/PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team will take a break from Lone Star Conference play to face Benedictine-Mesa and Arizona Christian this Tuesday and Wednesday on the road.
WNMU is 1-8 overall so far on the season and 0-4 in conference play. They will be looking to snap an eight-game losing streak after opening the year with a victory over Oklahoma Panhandle.
Freshman
Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) and sophomore
Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy ) led the team in scoring in the two games last week. Sophomore
Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air ) continues to pace the team in scoring averaging 15.5 points per game, while adding 4.9 rebounds, 14 assists and four steals. Junior
Latrell Spivey (Phoenix, AZ/Westview) still averages a double-double with 10.2 points and 11.2 rebounds. He also leads the team in blocks with six. Giron (9.3) and McCray (9.2) are next on the team in terms of scoring. McCray has a team-best 15 assists, while he is tied with Giron for the most steals with nine. The Mustangs are 0-4 on the road this season with their last road game taking place on Dec. 3 at UT Permian Basin. WNMU averages 65.3 points per game and allows 82.6, they make 36 percent from the field and allow 42 percent.
The Mustangs rank in the top-five in the Lone Star in a few categories including third in defensive rebounds per game (28.33), 47th nationally, fourth in turnovers per game (13.7) and fifth in three point field goals attempted (218) and fewest turnovers (123).
Individually, Spivey and Enriquez are in the top-five in the conference in several categories. Spivey leads the conference in rebounds per game (11.2), 15th nationally, defensive rebounds per game (7.67), 16th nationally, double-doubles (4), 23rd nationally. He is second in total rebounds (101), 20th nationally and third in offensive rebounds per game (3.56), 34th nationally. Enriquez is fourth in both free throws attempted (62), 45th nationally and in free throws made (44), 57th nationally.
WNMU will open the week on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. against Benedictine-Mesa. The Redhawks are 4-7 on the season and 3-2 at home. They nearly came back to win in their last game against Arizona Christian before falling, 92-81.
Monnard Brown leads the team in scoring at 13.1 per game, he also adds 4.8 rebounds. Jorge Cano is second on the team with 12.5 points per game, while Robert Kincade adds 11.5 points per game. Former Mustang
Carter Aby (San Tan Valley, AZ/Combs) is averaging 4.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in playing all 11 games, starting eight. As a team, they average 78.0 points and allow 87.0. They make 45 percent and allow 48 percent of field goals made.
The two teams played twice last year with Benedictine-Mesa coming away with both wins grabbing the eight-point victory in Mesa and then a close two-point win in Silver City.
The Mustangs will turn right around and play Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. against Arizona Christian. The Firestorm are 5-1 overall and 4-1 at home. They last played on Dec. 10 at home against Master's University falling just short, 84-79.
Chris Sterling leads the team averaging 19.4 points per game, along with adding 5.0 rebounds. Shy McClelland (16.0) and Matt Willkomm (10.0) also average double-figures in scoring. McClealland leads the team in rebounding at 7.0 per game. Former Mustang
Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) has played in five games this year, averaging 6.2 points and 4.4 rebounds. They average 91 points per game and allow 71 points. They make 48 percent from the field and allow 38 percent.
