Fields Continues Scoring Tear in Win Over Western State

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Junior Jeylynn Fields (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande) posted her second straight 20 point game and led the team in scoring for the third consecutive contest as her 22 points powered the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team to the 69-59 victory over Western State Colorado University Friday in the Colorado Mesa Holiday Inn and Suites Thanksgiving Classic.

Fields went 8-17 from the field, 3-5 from deep, while adding five rebounds, an assist and four steals to lead the Lady Mustangs (4-1) to their second straight victory. WNMU utilized strong first and fourth quarters outscoring the Mountaineers (0-3) by 12 points combined in the two quarters.

Senior Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) and junior Keshaun Clark (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria) also scored in double-figures with Gutierrez piling in 17 points and Clark with 16.

WSCU led for just over two minutes in the first quarter and never regained the lead when Fields hit a jumper at the 7:12 mark of the opening quarter for the 4-3 lead. Gutierrez and Fields combined for four straight points near the end of the quarter to push the lead to nine at 18-9. Sydnie Lengyel hit a layup for WSCU to trim the lead back to seven through the first 10 minutes.

The Mountaineers nearly came all the way back in the second quarter fighting to within two at 26-24 with 3:47 to go before halftime when the Lady Mustangs called a key timeout to regroup. The timeout worked with WNMU ripping off a 6-0 run with Fields hitting a three-pointer and later a foul shot after two from the stripe by Gutierrez for the 32-24 lead.

WSCU could only cut into the lead by two points before halftime with WNMU holding the 36-30 lead at the break.

Gutierrez and sophomore Megan Looney (Phoenix, AZ/Apache Junction ) pushed the lead to nine three times during various times in the third quarter, first on a three by Gutierrez, then a jumper by Gutierrez before Looney hit two foul shots with 4:06 to go in the quarter for the 45-36 lead. Just like in previous quarters, the Mountaineers kept coming back, trailing by just five at 52-47 and the end of three.

Early in the fourth WSCU moved back to within three a minute in, but that would be as close as they could get the rest of the way. Junior Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) hit a jumper a minute later to ignite a 12-3 run to move the advantage to 12 points. Fields, Clark and Looney all came through with points during the run to leave WNMU in front 65-53 with 3:44 to go in the game.

The Mountaineers wouldn't get any closer than nine points the rest of the way with WNMU taking the 10-point victory.

WNMU went 22-50 (44) from the field, 6-12 (50) from three and 19-25 (76) at the charity stripe.

Harlie Williams led WSCU with 20 points, while Brianna Wilber added 12 points. The Mountaineers made 20-59 (34) from the field, 8-21 (38) from three and 11-15 (73) at the line. The Lady Mustangs held the edge in points off turnovers (10-6), bench points (19-11) and points in the paint (19-14).

WNMU will face host Colorado Mesa on Saturday night at 5 p.m.
