GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Following a tight victory over Northern New Mexico College, the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team will head to the Colorado Mesa University Holiday Inn and Suites Thanksgiving Classic where they will meet up with Western State and Colorado Mesa.
Senior
Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) and junior
Jeylynn Fields (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande) have led the team in scoring through the first four games with Gutierrez going for 25 and 16 to lead in the first two games and then Fields with 15 and 26 in the most recent two contests.
Gutierrez leads the team averaging 17.8 points per game, along with 15 assists, a block, nine steals and 10 three-pointers. Fields is second with 15.8 points, eight assists, a block, eight steals and 3.3 rebounds per game. Junior
Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) is the third Lady Mustang to average in double-figures in scoring at 11.0. She brings down 5.5 rebounds, four assists, two blocks and seven steals. Sophomore
Megan Looney (Phoenix, AZ/Apache Junction ) grabs a team-best 6.0 rebounds per game and junior
Shoniquia Coleman (Austin, TX/Colony) is tied with Gutierrez for the team lead in steals with nine apiece. WNMU averages 68.0 points per game and allow 65.0 points.
First up at 1 p.m. on Friday will be a meeting with the Mountaineers from Western State. WSCU is 0-2 on the season with losses to Tarleton State and Alaska-Fairbanks in the CSU-Pueblo Al Kaly Shrine Classic. The Mountaineers average 46.0 points per game and allow 62.0 points. Harlie Williams leads the way at 8.5 points per game, followed by 7.0 per game from Sydnie Lengyel. Williams also leads the team with 5.0 boards per contest. The Lady Mustangs took both games last season when they were RMAC opponents winning in Silver City by seven and in Gunnison by 24.
To close the weekend, WNMU will face Colorado Mesa on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Mavericks are 1-1 on the season with a win against Dixie State and a loss to Simon Fraser. They came close to defeating Southern Utah in an exhibition contest to start the season falling by five. CMU scores 62.5 points per game, same as their opponents. Bryanna Adams is leading the team with 16.0 points per game and has a team-best 7.0 rebounds. Erin Reichle adds 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds. WNMU and CMU played each other just once last year with the Mavericks taking the 12-point victory in Silver City.
