SILVER CITY, N.M. – With the final pair of home games before four straight on the road, the Western New Mexico University basketball teams will host Regis University and Chadron State College this Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Mustangs are 6-8 overall and 4-5 in the RMAC following a split this past weekend defeating Western State before falling to Colorado State University-Pueblo. WNMU is 2-4 at home this season.
Desiree Smith (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union ) leads the team in several categories including points per game (10.3), assists (42), steals (30), free throws (37) and field goals made (51). She has played in every game this season.
Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ), on the heels of her career-high 29 points against the ThunderWolves, averages 9.2 points per game and leads the team in three-pointers with 27.
Deandra Williams (Rosenburg, TX/Terry ) leads the team in rebounds per game at 6.1. WNMU averages 56.9 points and allows 62.1. They connect on 35 percent from the field, while opponents make 40 percent.
The Lady Mustangs rank in the top-100 nationally in several categories including 28th in fewest fouls (208), first in the RMAC, 64th in fewest turnovers (204), eighth in the RMAC, 15th in personal fouls per game (14.9), first in the RMAC, 88th in steals (133), fourth in the RMAC, 76th in steals per game (9.5), fifth in the RMAC, 21st in three point field goal defense (26), second in the RMAC, 66th in turnover margin (2.79), fifth in the RMAC and 59th in turnovers per game (14.6), seventh in the RMAC.
Smith is in the top-10 in several RMAC categories including assist-to-turnover (1.05), fifth in the RMAC, assists (43), fifth in the RMAC, assists per game (3.1), sixth in RMAC, free throw attempts (57), ninth in the RMAC, steals (30), fifth in the RMAC, and steals per game (2.14), eighth in the RMAC. Gutierrez is eighth in the RMAC in three point field goals made (27) and eighth in the RMAC in three point field goals made per game (1.93).
Jada Grady (Louisville, KY/Seneca ) is just on the outside of the top-10 coming in 11th in the RMAC in both three point field goals made (23) and three point field goals made per game (1.77).
WNMU will open the week on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. against Regis University. The Rangers are 7-8 overall on the season and 5-4 in the RMAC, they have won three of their last four including a win last time out over South Dakota Mines. They are 2-4 away from home. Bay'Lee Purdy leads the offense with 14.6 points per game, while Caresse Williams adds 11.7. Kaylie Rader leads on the glass pulling down 7.1 rebounds per contest. Regis averages 62.5 points per game and allows 62.9. They make 39 percent and allow 39 percent from the field.
Regis won the matchup last year posting a tight 58-50 victory in Denver. The last time the teams played in Silver City during the 2013-14 season the Lady Mustangs won an exciting 65-63 contest.
The Lady Mustangs close the weekend on Saturday night against Chadron State with tip also set for 5:30 p.m. The Eagles are 3-10 overall and 3-6 in the RMAC. They are 1-5 away from home. Maka Daysh leads the team in both points per game (14) and rebounds (7.9). Emma Block adds 10.9 per game. Chadron State averages 60.6 points per game and allows 67.8. They make 39 percent from the field and allow 37 percent.
WNMU claimed last year's meeting in Silver City, 65-55.

The men will look to post their first victory of the season this weekend as they are 0-14 overall and 0-9 in the RMAC. The Mustangs are 0-6 at home this season.
Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy ) is having a strong first season with WNMU as the freshman leads the team in points per game (11), steals (15) and free throws (57).
Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon) is right behind pouring in 9.9 per night and also hauls in a team-high 5.4 rebounds.
Makhtar Fall (Morocco/Ecole Al Jabr) leads in blocks with 13. WNMU averages 68.1 points per game and allows 80.1. They connect on 38 percent from the field and allow 44 percent.
Nationally, WNMU ranks in the top-100 in defensive rebounds per game (26.71), 98
th and fourth in the RMAC and in the top-five in the RMAC in blocked shots per game (3.1), third, field goal percentage defense (44), fifth, steals per game (6.8), third, three point field goal defense (34.7), fifth, total blocks (44), third, total steals (95), fifth and turnovers forced per game (14.57), second.
McCray ranks in the top-10 in the RMAC in both free throw attempts (79), 10
th in the conference and in free throws made (57), ninth in the conference.
The Mustangs open the weekend on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. against Regis University. The Rangers are 6-9 overall and 4-5 in the RMAC having won three of their last four games. Dexter Sienko leads in points averaging 16.3 per game, while Jarrett Brodbeck adds 15.9 per contest. Sienko also leads in rebounding at 6.7 per game. They average 72.9 points per game and allow 73.6. They shoot well from the field making 54 percent, but also allow 56 percent. They are 3-4 away from home.
The Mustangs won last year at Regis taking the 73-66 victory.
To close the weekend WNMU will host Chadron State on Saturday night starting at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles are 5-8 overall and 3-6 in the RMAC and have lost their last three games. They are 0-6 on the road. Warren Gordon and Billy Johnson lead the offense with Gordon averaging 11.9 and Johnson at 11.7 points per game. Davante McCallam grabs a team-high 5.6 rebounds. They average 67.6 points and allow 73.3 points per game. They make 41 percent from the field and allow 48 percent from opponents.
The Mustangs claimed last year's contest in exciting fashion pulling out the 78-76 victory in Silver City.
