Mavericks Drill 15 Three-Pointers to Down Men's Basketball

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Colorado Mesa University connected on 56 percent of their shots including 15 three-pointers to defeat the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team, 92-66, Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

CMU (17-7, 12-6 RMAC) jumped out to a 10-2 lead over the first three-plus minutes and never let their foot off the gas.

Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) helped bring WNMU (2-21, 2-17 RMAC) back to within six with a jumper at the 15:23 mark, just to watch the Mavericks go on an 8-0 run.

Brandon Williams (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep) drilled the first of his two three-pointers on the night near the midway point of the opening half to draw WNMU back to within 10. The Mavericks kept firing and took a 47-29 lead into the locker room.

CMU began the second half on a 10-3 run to stretch the lead to 25. WNMU would only get as close as 21 a couple of times the remainder of the half with the last coming on a jumper by Adam Kesler (Silver City, NM/Silver) near the midway point of the second stanza.

Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) led WNMU with 18 points and also recorded seven assists. Castrillo added 12 and Williams and Kesler came off the bench to add eight points apiece. Ryan Stephan led CMU with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Landon Vermeer added 22 points and Derek Biale posted 16 assists.

CMU made 35-of-62 (56.5) from the field and went 15-of-29 (51.7) from three and 7-of-8 (87.5) from the foul line. WNMU made 24-of-60 (40) from the floor, 5-of-22 (22.7) from three and went 13-of-19 (68.4) from the foul line.

WNMU will hit the road this coming Friday when they will play at Colorado Christian University beginning at 7:30 p.m.
