ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University women's basketball team posted a pair of double-digit quarters and held the Lobos to 14 percent shooting from three-point range Wednesday night before the University of New Mexico claimed the 78-41 exhibition win.
In what was a staple of the Lady Mustangs' season a year ago started out that way in 2015-16. WNMU was second in the nation last year in three-point field goal defense and limited New Mexico to just two makes in 14 attempts.
New this season is the four, 10-minute quarters instead of two, 20-minute halves. The Lady Mustangs started strong in the first quarter posting 11 points and trailed by just four after the first 10 minutes.
Desiree Smith (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union ) connected on the first points of the game just over a minute in that tied the game at two.
Myla Woods-Brown (Roswell, NM/Roswell ) helped stop a 7-0 Lobo run with a three in transition at the 6:22 mark leaving WNMU down by four, 9-5.
Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) and Smith would add a pair of jumpers, around a pair from the foul line by
Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) to provide the 11 points for WNMU in the quarter.
UNM responded in the second quarter outscoring WNMU 26-4 to take a 41-15 lead into halftime.
The third quarter was the highest scoring output of any quarter for the Lady Mustangs as they tallied 17 points. The Lobos came out firing out of the break going on a 9-0 run before Woods-Brown hit a layup off the fastbreak and then stepped back for another three-pointer. Toward the end of the quarter,
Cristiana Yepa (Dulce, NM/Dulce ) would put together her own 5-0 run as she hit a pair from the line and then stepped back for a triple. Gutierrez hit a three before the quarter ran out to provide the final points in the quarter for WNMU.
It would be a low scoring fourth quarter with UNM holding a 13-9 advantage to go on and claim the 78-41 victory.

My'Kale French (Racine, WI/Case ) and Gutierrez accounted for the scoring for WNMU in the final frame.
Gutierrez came off the bench to lead WNMU in scoring with nine points, going 4-of-6 from the floor. Woods-Brown added eight points with a 3-for-4 shooting night and a pair of three-pointers. Botelho and
Deandra Williams (Rosenburg, TX/Terry ) tied for the team lead in rebounds with each bringing down four. Woods-Brown, Williams and
Audrey Oliver (Las Cruces, NM/Mayfield ) had two steals apiece.
The Lady Mustangs shot the ball well in the second half from downtown making 50 percent (4-8) and hit at 34.5 percent (10-29) from the floor in the second stanza. UNM shot 48.4 percent (31-64) from the field in the game and used their height advantage in the paint to post a 56-12 advantage.
UNM was led by Jaisa Nunn who tallied 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting.
WNMU will jump into regular season action on Friday, November 13 when they will open at Oklahoma Panhandle State beginning at 5 p.m. Mountain Time.
