Williams Records Second Straight Double-Double at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Tex. – Deandra Williams (Rosenburg, TX/Terry ) posted her second straight double-double going for 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team fell to Angelo State University, 85-47, Saturday afternoon.

Williams, who went for 14 points and 10 rebounds against the University of the Southwest on Wednesday, had another strong game on Saturday connecting on 6-9 from the field and added three steals.

ASU (2-0) started early and never looked back. The Belles started the game on a 16-2 run three minutes in. Desiree Smith (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union ), Williams and My'Kale French (Racine, WI/Case ) accounted for the 11 points in the first quarter as WNMU (2-2) trailed 27-11 after one.

A pair of Smith free throws and a jumper by Jayla Brown (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista ) helped bring the Lady Mustangs back to within 15 a couple of times, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the first half with ASU taking the 50-20 lead into the locker room.

The pressure didn't stop in the second half with the Belles going on a 6-0 run. The Belles would end up outscoring the Lady Mustangs in the first three quarters and WNMU finished strong with a 13-8 scoring advantage in the fourth.

WNMU connected on 19-61 (31.1) from the field while ASU made 29-65 (44.6). The Belles held the edge on three-pointers (8-2) and free throws (19-7). WNMU held the edge in fastbreak points (7-6).

Outside of Williams' double-double, Smith added seven points and three assists.

Taylor Dorsey powered the Belles with 22 points.

WNMU will remain in Texas as they will face Division I Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday at 4:30 p.m. Mountain Standard Time for an exhibition contest.
