Box Score MESA, Ariz. – Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon) and
Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air ) each scored in double-figures as the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team fell just short to Benedictine University at Mesa, 73-65, Friday night.
WNMU (0-4) erased a pair of early six-point deficits in the first half to take their first lead near the midway point on a steal and transition layup by
Adam Kesler (Silver City, NM/Silver) to grab the lead at 17-16.
Range added to his team-high 12 points with a jumper with eight minutes to go to halftime that moved the lead to seven at 26-19. Enriquez posted a three later in the half that had the Mustangs with their largest lead at nine, 35-26.
The Redhawks (3-6) tallied the final two points of the half leaving the Mustangs with a 35-28 lead at the break.
Benedictine University at Mesa blitzed the Mustangs to start the second half going on a 15-4 run to erase the deficit and take a 43-39 lead five minutes in.
A pair of free throws by
Carter Aby (San Tan Valley, AZ/Combs) brought WNMU back to within two a minute later, but that would be as close as the Mustangs would get the rest of the way.
After trailing by double-digits, the Mustangs got back to within six a pair of times down the stretch with the last coming on a jumper by
Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy ) before time ran out on WNMU.
Range added six rebounds to go along with his 12 points. Enriquez tallied his 10 points off the bench.
Brandon Tanter (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep) added nine points and three assists.
Troy Conley led the Redhawks with 18 points, connecting on four three-pointers.
Both teams shot around 38 percent with WNMU hitting on 25-65 (38.5) to a 24-63 (38.1) clip for the Redhawks. Benedictine University at Mesa held the edge in three-pointers (8-5) and at the free throw line (17-10).
WNMU will now be off for the Thanksgiving break as they will play Benedictine University at Mesa again this time in Silver City on Dec. 1 at 7 p.m.
