SAN ANGELO/CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex. – Following a quick stop at home, the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team will now head to Texas for a pair of games coming up. The Lady Mustangs will visit Angelo State on Saturday, before playing an exhibition contest against Division I Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Monday.
WNMU is 2-1 so far on the season but could easily be 3-0 having lost their only game by four in the closing minutes. The Lady Mustangs have wins over Oklahoma Panhandle State and University of the Southwest.
Jada Grady (Louisville, KY/Seneca ) leads the offense averaging 10.3 points per game along with 3.0 rebounds, two assists and three steals in playing 29.3 minutes per contest.
Desiree Smith (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union ) and
Cristiana Yepa (Dulce, NM/Dulce ) are both averaging 9.3 per game, while
Deandra Williams (Rosenburg, TX/Terry ) leads the team in rebounds at 8.0 per game. She is coming off of a double-double contest against University of the Southwest when she went for 14 points and 10 rebounds. So far in the early season Grady,
Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ), Williams and
Myla Woods-Brown (Roswell, NM/Roswell ) have started all three games. Smith has started two, while
Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) has the other start.
WNMU will first go against Angelo State on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Mountain Standard Time. The Belles rolled past Arlington Baptist College, 108-67, on Nov. 17. Angelo State went 9-18 last season and fell in the first round of their conference tournament. Four players went for double-figures in their home opener led by Taylor Dorsey's 27 points and also added a double-double with 10 rebounds. Brea Mitchell recorded a double-double as well with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Mustangs will close the trip on Monday at 4:30 p.m. Mountain Standard Time at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Islanders are 1-2 on the season posting their first win over Rice, 60-55, on Wednesday. They played Division II Texas A&M International in an exhibition contest back on Nov. 5 and posted a 70-45 victory. They went 18-12 last year and lost in the first round of their conference tournament.
Shay Weaver leads the team at 13.3 points per game, while Kassie Jones and Brittany Mbamalu tally eight points per contest. Camesha Davis leads the way in rebounds with 7.7.
