ALAMOSA/DURANGO, Colo. – Coming off of a big road victory at Metro State University Denver, the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team will remain on the road traveling back to Colorado to face Adams State and Fort Lewis.
WNMU will open the week on Friday against Adams State, as the Lady Grizzlies are 1-10 overall and 1-6 in the RMAC having lost their last three games against Colorado Mesa, Black Hills State and Chadron State. Their victory came at home against Western State on Dec. 20 in Alamosa.
The Lady Grizzlies are averaging 54.9 points per game while allowing 73.4. The team also shoots 29 percent from the floor, while opponents connect on 46.4 percent. Mariah Gonzales and Desiree Anderson power the offense with both in double-figures led by 13 from Gonzales and 12.8 from Anderson. Anderson leads the team in rebounds at 4.4 per contest.
The teams have traded sweeps of each other in the last two years. Last season, ASU won both games, while WNMU claimed both victories in 2012-13.

The next night on Saturday the Lady Mustangs will play Fort Lewis. The Lady Skyhawks are 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the RMAC, currently just a half-game ahead of WNMU in the conference standings. They are 3-1 at home with their only loss to Colorado Mesa by two points. FLC collected home wins against Adams State, Western State and Northern New Mexico. This past weekend they split on the road with a win at Chadron State (77-59), before a 59-52 setback against Black Hills State.
FLC averages 62.6 points per game while giving up 59.1 per contest. They make nearly 38 percent (37.9) from the field while holding opponents to a 34.4 percent effort. Mary Brinton has been a force inside leading the team in points per game (13.1), rebounds (6) and is shooting 56.7 percent from the field. The next highest scorers on the team average 6.9 per game in Kylie Santos and Kate Bayes.
The teams split last season with each winning on their home floors.

WNMU is 5-6 overall and 3-5 in the RMAC coming off of a split this past weekend in Denver. The Lady Mustangs closed the weekend strong with a 59-47 win at Metro State. WNMU is averaging 66.5 points per game while holding opponents to a 58.5 output. The team nearly makes right at 40 percent (39.8) from the field, while opponents are making 37.7 percent. Three-point shooting has also helped the scoring surge making 64 from downtown.
Ashley Mitchell (Fort Defiance, AZ/Window Rock High School) leads the team in points per game averaging 12.8 a night. She leads in three-pointers made with 18.
Stephanie Moore (Anton, TX/Anton High School) (8.9) and
RaTanya Newsome (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) (8.5) are next in terms of scoring. Newsome leads in steals (28) and assists (68).
Nalani Hernandez (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) still holds the lead in rebounding at 7.7 per game, while
Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani High School) pulls in 4.5 a game.
When it comes to NCAA rankings WNMU is 25
th in turnover margin (5.18), 28
th in scoring defense (58.5) and 43
rd in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.02). Individually, Newsome is ninth in assists per game.
The Lady Mustangs are just a half-game out of eighth in the conference and a game and a half out of fifth with three teams tied at 4-3.
Following this road swing, WNMU will return home to host Black Hills State and Chadron State on Jan. 16 and 17
th.
