SILVER CITY, N.M. – After a four-game road swing, the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team returns home to face Black Hills State University and Chadron State College this weekend.
First up on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. the Lady Mustangs will face Black Hills State. The Lady Yellow Jackets are 9-4 overall and 7-2 in the RMAC. They have won five straight in the conference, with two coming on the road at Regis and Chadron State. Their only conference losses came at Colorado Christian (61-57) and Metro State (63-46). They are 6-0 at home and 3-4 away from Spearfish.
BHSU averages 65.1 points per game while allowing 60.2. They make 39.7 percent from the field, while opponents connect on 37.8 percent of their shots. Chelsey Biegler is off to another strong start for the Lady Yellow Jackets leading the way in points at 12.5 per contest. Courtney Patterson is next on the list at 8.6 per game. Dakota Barrie leads the team in rebounds at 4.9 per game, while also averaging 7.5 points.
Last year's game in Spearfish went to BHSU by a score of 80-63. Last time the teams played in Silver City in 2012-13, BHSU came away with a 70-63 victory.

The next night on Saturday also at 5:30 p.m. WNMU will face Chadron State. The Lady Eagles are 2-11 overall and 2-7 in the RMAC. They split their last two games defeating Adams State (70-56), before falling to Black Hills State (78-69). CSC is 2-4 at home and 0-7 away from Chadron.
The Lady Eagles average 58.8 points per game and allow 71.7 per night. They make close to 38 percent (37.6) from the floor, while opponents are hitting on over 43 percent (43.3). Emma Block leads the way at 13.7 per contest. Maka Daysh adds 8.7 per night. Daysh leads the team in rebounding at 4.2 per game.
CSC took last year's matchup in Chadron, 74-68, while WNMU claimed the last matchup in Silver City in 2012-13, 72-44.
WNMU is 6-7 overall and 4-6 in the RMAC having split their last four games with wins over MSU Denver and Adams State. The Lady Mustangs average 65.6 points per game and are one of the top defensive teams in the RMAC allowing 59.2 points, good for third in the conference and 39
th in the NCAA stats. WNMU is 3-2 at home this season and 3-4 away from Silver City. In the RMAC, they hold a 2-2 mark at home and 2-4 mark away.
Ashley Mitchell (Fort Defiance, AZ/Window Rock High School) leads the offense at 12.8 points per game. She also adds 20 steals, 25 assists and 22 three-pointers, which also leads the squad.
Stephanie Moore (Anton, TX/Anton High School) (9.2),
RaTanya Newsome (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) (8.7) and
Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani High School) (8.2) all average at least eight per game. Newsome leads the team in steals (31) and assists (81). She continues to lead the RMAC in assists per game (6.2) and in terms of NCAA stats she is tied for eighth nationally in assists per contest. She is second in the RMAC in steals per game (2.4) and sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.4).
Nalani Hernandez (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) leads the way in rebounds per game (7), while Botelho leads in blocks with six.
WNMU still ranks high in the NCAA stats in terms of assist-to-turnover ratio (1.01) good for 48
th and in turnover margin (4.23) good for 31
st. The Lady Mustangs are just a half-game back of Regis for eighth in the RMAC standings and just a game and a half back of Fort Lewis and Colorado Christian for sixth.
