Softball Gains Split After Run-Rule Win Over Regis

Amber Taynton tossed a complete game shutout against Regis.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENVER, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University softball team rebounded from a 12-0 loss in five innings to Metro State University earlier in the day to take out Regis University in five innings, 9-0, Saturday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

WNMU (7-20, 5-9 RMAC) racked up nine runs on seven hits to run-rule the Rangers (7-16, 6-7 RMAC). The third and fourth innings produced all the runs tallying three in the third and then six in the fourth to put the game away.

With two outs, it looked to be a scoreless inning for the Lady Mustangs in the third. But senior Mariah McDonald (Silver City/Silver City High School) singled to move sophomore Krystal Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) to second who singled earlier just in time for senior Kale Gahn (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle High School) to unload on what would be her first of two home runs with a three-run bomb to give WNMU a 3-0 lead.

The next inning, Gahn would strike again, but before she drilled another one over the fence, the Lady Mustangs drove in four runs. Freshman Kylie Christman (Litchfield Park, AZ/Millennium) delivered a sacrifice fly for the first run of the frame that scored redshirt freshman Davi Martin (Silver City, NM/Silver City) who pinch-ran for senior Tessa Fanning (Cottonwood, AZ/Mingus Union) as she walked to open the inning. Junior Stephanie Higgins (Escondido, CA/Mission Hills High School) doubled in senior Breanna Diaz (Las Cruces, NM/Mayfield) and junior Alexis Lawton (Gilbert, AZ/Mesquite) after both reached on walks to push the lead to 6-0. Following an RBI single by McDonald that brought home Higgins, Gahn drilled her second home run on a 1-1 pitch to left-center for a pair of runs and a 9-0 lead.

Senior Amber Taynton (Lakeside, CA/El Capitan) (1-7) picked up her first win of the season in the circle as she limited the Rangers to just three hits in five innings. McDonald and Gahn posted two hits apiece, as Gahn drove in five. Higgins added a pair of RBI.

In the first game of the day, Metro State (12-4, 8-3 RMAC) scored 10 runs over the first two innings to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish on their way to a 12-0 run-rule victory.

WNMU threatened in the first getting a leadoff single from Higgins and later senior Ricki Gentry (Lakeside, CA/Christian High School) reached on an error, but a fielder's choice groundout ended the inning.

The Roadrunners would score five in the home half and another five in the second for a 10-0 lead. The Lady Mustangs had another pair of runners on in the fourth as sophomore Mary Othon (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) reached on an error and Fanning singled before another groundout ended the threat.

MSU held an 11-3 advantage in hits, as Higgins, Diaz and Fanning all recorded a hit. Sophomore Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) (6-10) took the loss in the circle as she pitched all four innings.

WNMU will conclude the RMAC Pod Sunday facing Metro State at 11 a.m. and then Regis at 1 p.m.
