SILVER CITY, N.M. – Having played their first 13 games of the season on the road, the Western New Mexico University softball team returns home to open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action against Colorado Christian University this Saturday and Sunday.
During the non-conference portion of the schedule, the Lady Mustangs (2-11) collected wins over Texas-Permian Basin (2-1) and Abilene Christian (4-2). WNMU is hitting .286 as a team with senior
Ricki Gentry (Lakeside, CA/Christian High School) on a hitting tear holding a .486 batting average with two doubles and six RBI. She is currently on a six-game hitting streak. Senior
Kale Gahn (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle High School) has a nine-game hitting streak and is second on the team with a .359 batting average, along with two doubles and three RBI. Junior
Stephanie Higgins (Escondido, CA/Mission Hills High School) holds a .333 batting average with a team-high six doubles and two RBI. In the circle, sophomore
Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) has logged the most innings with 39.1 and is 2-5 on the season in seven appearances, as she has five complete games. Senior
Amber Taynton (Lakeside, CA/El Capitan) has tossed 18 innings, while sophomore
Chyler Imai (Kapaau, HI/Kohala) (7.1) and freshman
Breanna Aker (El Mirage, AZ/Apollo) (7.0) have also spent time in the circle.
Colorado Christian (4-7) has a pair of wins over Oklahoma Panhandle State, Nova Southeastern and Eckerd. The Cougars have lost four straight with their last game coming on Feb. 9 against Barry in which they lost by just one, 2-1.
Jessica Romine leads the offense with a .375 batting average, along with three doubles, a triple and 10 RBI. Dana Rex (.357) and Ashley Behabetz (.324) are also batting over .300. In the circle, Mariah Bledsoe has accumulated 37.2 innings and is 1-4 with a 4.06 ERA. Keely Gray has also seen 20 innings and has a 2-2 record and Katie Edison has tossed 9.1 innings.
WNMU and CCU will play a pair of doubleheaders first on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. and then on Sunday at 11 a.m.
