DENVER, Colo. – Coming out of the holiday break, the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team will head to Denver to face Regis and Metro State this weekend.
The Lady Rangers (6-3, 2-3 RMAC) split their last two games that were both at home defeating Chadron State (69-59) before falling to Black Hills State (75-65). Their other conference win came at UCCS.
Bay'Lee Purdy has taken charge this season with sister Tae'Lor Purdy having graduated this past season. Bay'Lee leads Regis in points per game (17.3). Caresse Williams (14.6) and Karlyn Johnson (10) also average in double-figures. Kaycee Hart leads the way in rebounds with 6.9 per contest.
Last season, the Lady Mustangs came away with a close 65-63 win at home against Regis. WNMU and Regis will play Friday night at 5 p.m.
MSU Denver will be the next opponent on Saturday night also at 5 p.m. The Lady Roadrunners are 6-3 overall, 3-2 RMAC and have won their last two at home against Black Hills State (63-46) and Chadron State (67-47).
Deni Jacobs leads the way at 15.3 points per game. Georgia Ohdorf (12) and Emily Hartegan (10.6) also tally in double-digits. Jacobs leads the team in rebounds at 7.9 per game.
WNMU came away with a 52-44 win over Metro State last year in Silver City which marked the first win in program history over the Lady Roadrunners.
WNMU is 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the RMAC. The Lady Mustangs will look to snap a four-game losing streak with a pair of close losses at home against UCCS and CSU-Pueblo.
Ashley Mitchell (Fort Defiance, AZ/Window Rock High School) leads the team with 12 points per game.
Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani High School) (8.7) and
Stephanie Douthit (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Mountain ) (8.3) are second and third respectively in scoring.
RaTanya Newsome (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) leads the team in steals (22), assists (54) and averages 7.9 points.
Nalani Hernandez (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) leads the team in rebounds per game (7.7) and blocks (3).
In terms of national rankings, WNMU is 20
th in turnover margin (6.11) and 29
th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.11). Newsome is tied for 10
th in assists per game (6.0).
In terms of RMAC rankings WNMU is second in scoring defense (59.8), second in scoring margin (9.3), second in assists per game (16.2), second in steals per game (10.8), first in turnover margin (6.11) and first in assists-to-turnover ratio (1.1). Newsome is first in assists per game, third in steals per game and
Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley High School) is first in three-point percentage (51.9).
