Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa University shot over 50 percent and held a 30-point advantage on points in the paint on their way to taking an 82-42 win over the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team Friday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
The Mavericks (7-2, 2-1 RMAC) shot 52.7 percent (29-55) and posted a 34-4 points in the paint spread to take the victory.
WNMU (0-7, 0-3 RMAC) scored the first points a minute in on a layup by
Brandon Tanter (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep). Tanter expanded the lead to four with a three a few minutes later for the 5-1 lead.
Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) helped keep the Mustangs in front with a layup at the 15:16 mark for the 7-4 advantage.
Gavin Wood (Florence, AZ/Florence ) connected on a three a few possessions later to put the Mustangs back in front at 10-9.
After CMU launched an 8-0 run,
Roland Wyatt (Los Angeles, CA/Juniper Serra ) hit a three-pointer to trim the deficit to four.
The Mavericks had another run up their sleeves, this one though was a 18-0 variety to put the game out of reach.
The Mustangs ended up tallying 10 more points in the second half than they did in the first with 26.
Wood came off the bench to lead WNMU with 12 points, going 4-of-8 from three. Wyatt led in rebounds with four,
Brandon Williams (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep) tallied six assists and both
Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) and
Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) tied for the team lead in steals with two apiece.
Jerry Duckworth led CMU and all-scorers with 24 points.
WNMU will play at Western State Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. New Mexico Highlands defeated the Mountaineers, 77-68, earlier tonight.
