Box Score SILVER CITY, N.M. – No. 23 Angelo State University used solid shooting and transition points on their way to claiming a 85-52 victory Monday night over the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team.
The Rams shot 61.5 percent from the floor and held a 25-4 edge in fast break points.
Over the first few minutes,
Brandon Tanter (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep) and
Tyler Shea (Rancho Cucamunga, CA/Alta Loma) tallied baskets to push the Mustangs (0-4) in front, 4-2. Later,
Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) helped tie the game at six at the 15:33 mark with a jumper in the paint.
ASU (7-1) would respond with a 7-0 run to open a 13-6 lead.
Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) helped end the run with a three and then Tanter got loose for another jumper near the midway point of the half leaving WNMU down by just two, 15-13.
The Rams would then get on a roll outscoring the Mustangs by 18 over the remainder of the half to take a 38-18 lead into the locker room.
WNMU held the advantage in the first half when it came to second-chance points, 5-0.
In the second half, Shea had a big stanza posting 11 points.
Gavin Wood (Florence, AZ/Florence ) and Castrillo tallied five apiece, as the Mustangs nearly doubled their output from the first half collecting 34 points.
Shea, following his big second half, would go on to lead WNMU with 13 points making 4-of-6 from the field and 5-of-7 at the line. Scott tallied 10 points and a team-high four assists. Castrillo led the way in rebounds with six.
Chris Jones and Raijon Kelly led ASU and all-scorers with 14 points apiece.
WNMU will return to action at home this coming Friday when they open RMAC play against Colorado Mines beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside Drag's Court.
