ALPINE, Tex. – The Western New Mexico University women's basketball team will return from the break this coming Monday when they will play at Division III Sul Ross State beginning at 5:30 p.m. Central Time.
The Lady Mustangs (1-1) last played on Nov. 22 against Eastern New Mexico at The Pit as Eastern New Mexico claimed the 77-61 victory.
RaTanya Newsome (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) and
Nalani Hernandez (Tucson, AZ/Tucson High School) each scored in double-figures with Newsome tallying 13 and 10 for Hernandez. Hernandez added a double-double with 10 rebounds.
So far through two games this season,
Ashley Mitchell (Fort Defiance, AZ/Window Rock High School) leads in scoring at 10 points per game, Hernandez in rebounds at eight per game, Newsome in steals with five and assists with seven and Hernandez has two blocks.
The Lady Lobos (1-2) have played the University of the Southwest twice, winning 67-64, before dropping the last game at home against the Lady Mustangs, 53-47. They also fell to Arlington Baptist College, 80-67.
Ivette Trujillo leads the team with 10.5 points per game and Gabriela Meraz adds 10 per contest.
WNMU claimed a 105-55 victory last year when the teams matched up in Silver City.
