Men's Basketball Set to Host #23 Angelo State

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Returning from the break, the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team will host #23 Angelo State on Monday beginning at 5 p.m. inside Drag's Court.

It will also be a food drive, as fans can get free admission into the game with two canned foods or a monetary donation. Organized by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, all donations will go to the Silver City Gospel Mission. 

The Mustangs (0-3) nearly came back in their last game against Eastern New Mexico falling by just seven, 94-87, on Nov. 22 at The Pit. Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) had a monster game going for a career-high 36 points, as WNMU nearly erased a 19-point second half deficit. Gavin Wood (Florence, AZ/Florence ) came off the bench to chip in 14 points.

Following his big game, Castrillo leads the team in scoring at 15 points per game. He also leads the team in blocks (4) and rebounds (19). Brandon Tanter (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep) and Gavin Wood (Florence, AZ/Florence ) tally 10.7 points per game, as Tanter leads in assists with eight, while Wood leads in three-pointers with six. Brandon Williams (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep) holds the team lead in steals with four.

Last season, Angelo State collected the 64-47 victory against the Mustangs as the teams played each other in the Angelo State Tournament.

The Rams, ranked #23 in the latest NABC Poll, were 5-0 entering the weekend and split their two games falling to Colorado Mesa (70-67) and then defeating Western State (89-73) at the Colorado Mesa Thanksgiving Classic.

Prior to this weekend, they won all five games at home against Oklahoma Panhandle State, Texas A&M International, McMurry, Arkansas Tech and Oklahoma Wesleyan.
A trio of players average in double-figures led by Demario Mayfield's 17.7 points per game. Chris Jones adds 14.4, while Marsell Holden tallies 12. The high-scoring offense averages nearly 90 points per game (89.71), while holding opponents to under 64 (63.43).
