Box Score IGNACIO, Colo. – St. Mary's University came out of the gates with a 19-0 run and after the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team came back late in the first half, the Rattles pulled away for the 77-52 victory at the Skyhawk Classic Saturday night.
The Rattlers (1-1) tallied the first 19 points seven minutes in before
Brandon Tanter (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep) tallied the first points for WNMU (0-2) with a free throw. After cutting the deficit down to 15 a pair of times off free throws by
Tyler Shea (Rancho Cucamunga, CA/Alta Loma) and
Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley),
Roland Wyatt (Los Angeles, CA/Juniper Serra ) connected on a jumper in the paint at the 7:14 mark to bring the Mustangs to within 13, 25-12.
Following another run by St. Mary's, Shea and Wyatt combined for points down the stretch leaving the Mustangs within 17, 39-22, at the half. Just like the night before, WNMU cashed in from the foul line making 15-of-20 (75).
In the second stanza, WNMU kept it close putting up 30 points, but the Rattlers tallied 38 to take the victory.
Gavin Wood (Florence, AZ/Florence ) came off the bench to lead the Mustangs with 11 points, connecting on 3-of-6 from the field, all three-pointers and he also added a pair of rebounds and a block. Tanter added nine points, three assists, a block and a steal, while Wyatt posted eight points and three rebounds.
Kriston Minor and Marvin Whitt led the Rattlers and all-scorers going for 15 points.
WNMU will remain on the road this coming Saturday when they will play in Albuquerque at The Pit against Eastern New Mexico University beginning at 6 p.m.
