LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State University opened the game on a 15-0 run and never looked back in defeating the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team, 102-39, in exhibition action Monday night.
The Aggies posted the first 15 points just over four minutes in before
Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) got the Mustangs on the board with a dunk. That was the first of a team-high 14 points for Castrillo on the night, as he also led the squad with eight rebounds.
Castrillo would add another jumper later to continue his own 4-0 run to pull WNMU back to within 11.
NMSU had too much offense, coming back with 9-0 run.
Gavin Wood (Florence, AZ/Florence ) hit a three with 8:52 left to play in the half to get the Mustangs as close as they would get the rest of the half to within 15 at 26-11.
A Castrillo jumper and three-pointer by
Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) early in the second half gave WNMU a quick run before again NMSU went on a scoring spree to take the victory.
Outside of Castrillo's big night, Wood came off the bench to record six points, while Loucks scored five.
Pascal Siakam led NMSU and all players with 20 points in 21 minutes, he also added a double-double with 11 rebounds.
Following three exhibition contests, WNMU will open the regular season portion of their schedule this weekend in Ignacio, Colo., facing Texas-Permian Basin and St. Mary's on Friday and Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. both nights.
