ARVADA, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University football team will look to ride the momentum of their victory last week into their matchup with No. 16 Colorado School of Mines this Saturday at noon. The game will be played in Arvada, Colo., at the North Area Athletic Complex.
WNMU will look to continue their winning ways against the Orediggers, having claimed the last two in the series. Last year in Silver City, the Mustangs held off a late rally for the 25-22 victory. In 2012, WNMU rolled to a 54-28 victory in Golden which snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Orediggers.
So far this season, CSM is 5-0 and 3-0 in the RMAC with conference victories against Chadron State (33-18), Black Hills State (48-21) and last week at New Mexico Highlands (42-35). On the ground, Tevin Champagne leads the team going for 423 yards on 92 attempts and four scores. Dual-threat Justin Dvorak is second in rushing yards (203), while leading the team in TDs with five. He has also passed for 1,944 yards, completing 168-of-245 with 15 touchdowns to two interceptions. His main targets have been Jimmy Ellis (32 catches for 306 yards two TD), Cole Spurgeon (26, 349, two TD), Ty Young (25, 321, three TD) and Diamond Gillis leads the team in yards receiving (364), and has 19 receptions and two scores. On defense, Kole Kadavy has 55 tackles, eight for loss, two sacks and two interceptions. Both Dvorak and Kadavy were named RMAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.
WNMU enters with a 2-3 overall mark and 1-2 in the conference following last week's 24-17 win at home over Fort Lewis. In that game, the Mustangs used a 24-point second quarter to propel them to the victory.
Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) threw for 284 yards and three scores, while
Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) brought in five passes for 117 yards and two scores.
Marques Rodgers (Gardena, CA/Serra) ran for 86 yards on 19 attempts.
Zachary Dembrowski (Lake Elsinore/Elsinore HS) led the defense with 10 tackles, while
Anthony Avina (Lake Elsinore, CA/Lakeside HS) had eight stops, three for loss and two sacks.
So far on the season, Glasmann has completed 103-of-211 (48.8) for 1,526 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. Byrd continues to be the main target, pulling in 28 balls for 529 yards and six scores.
Xavier Ayers (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque) has added 15 catches for 234 and three scores. Rodgers and
Marcus Smith (San Diego, CA/Mira Mesa HS) also have two TD receptions apiece. On the ground, Rodgers has chewed up 376 yards on 78 attempts and a score.
Cleavon Barnes (Lancaster, CA/Lancaster ),
Preston Blincoe (El Centro, CA/Imperial) and
Michael Coe (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad) all have a rushing TD apiece.
Dembrowski leads the team with 31 stops, three for loss, along with a sack and fumble recovery.
Brandon Perkins (Tucson, AZ/Desert View ) has added 27 tackles with five pass breakups and defended. Avina leads the team in sacks with three, while
Darius Guillory (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) has the only interception. The team has recovered five fumbles, led by
Kristian King (Redlands, CA/Redlands East Valley) who has scooped up two.
Entering this weekend, Colorado School of Mines and CSU-Pueblo are tied atop the RMAC standings at 3-0 and are the only undefeated teams in the conference.
