Box Score 2 SILVER CITY, N.M. – CSU-Pueblo powered past the Western New Mexico University softball team Saturday as the ThunderWolves took both games, 14-2 and 15-1 in five innings in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
In the opening game, CSU-Pueblo (CSU-P) struck first scoring a run in each of the first two innings for a 2-0 lead after two.
The ThunderWolves would score two more in the fourth and three in the fifth to open a 7-0 lead through five.
CSU-P (17-5, 14-3 RMAC) tallied seven more in the top of the seventh when Western New Mexico University (WNMU) scored a pair in their home half.
Breanna Diaz (Las Cruces, NM/Mayfield) opened the inning with a deep double to center. After a strikeout,
Tessa Fanning (Cottonwood, AZ/Mingus Union) reached on a hit-by-pitch, which
Mary Othon (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) drove in the first WNMU (11-16, 8-8 RMAC) run of the game with a single up the middle.
Samantha Munoz (Peoria, AZ/Centennial), who pinch-ran for Fanning, would score the second run of the inning on a wild pitch which concluded the scoring at 14-2.
The ThunderWolves outhit WNMU, 17-4, as Diaz led the team in hits with two. Justine Bosio had three hits and four RBI to lead the ThunderWolves. Bosio also collected the win in the circle for CSU-P going all seven innings.
Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) (6-8) took the loss for WNMU tossing 4.2 innings, giving up four earned runs.
In the second game, The ThunderWolves opened the scoring with three unearned runs in the second inning for an early 3-0 lead after two.
CSU-P kept the offense coming, as they scored seven more in the fourth and five more in the fifth to open a 15-0 lead. WNMU scored a run in the home half of the inning when Higgins hit a solo home run to right-center.
CSU-P held a 14-7 advantage in hits, with Othon and
Ricki Gentry (Lakeside, CA/Christian High School) collecting two hits apiece. Kelli Henry collected the win in the circle for CSU-P pitching all five innings.
BreAnna Eaker (Ramona, CA/James Madison) (5-5) took the loss for WNMU, going 4.1 innings and giving up 13 runs, but only four were earned as WNMU committed five errors in the game.
The two teams will complete their four-game set on Sunday morning beginning at 11 a.m. with another doubleheader at the WNMU Softball Field.
