Men's Basketball Set For First Home Games of Season

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team will finally get their first home games of the season this weekend when they will face Colorado Mesa University and Western State Colorado University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.


WNMU (0-5, 0-2 RMAC) has played seven games away from home, two exhibitions, so far this season. This past weekend they fell to Colorado Mines (108-69) and Colorado Christian (93-68). The scoring has been evenly distributed this season with seven players averaging at least 6.2 points per game. Junior CJ Grigg (Reno, NV/) leads the way with 9.4, followed by senior Brelan Berry (Chandler, AZ/Basha High School) (9.0), freshman Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) (8.8), junior Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) (8.3), sophomore Adam Kesler (Silver City, NM/Silver) (7.4), junior Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) (6.2) and senior Edward Estavillo (Wilcox, AZ/Wilcox) (6.2). Castrillo is nearly averaging a double-double as he leads the team in rebounds at 8.3 per game. Scott leads the team in assists (27) and steals (13).


CMU (3-3, 1-1 RMAC) comes to Silver City first on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. having lost their last game at home against Black Hills State (74-66). Prior to that they were on a three-game winning streak defeating Montana Western (69-64), CSU-Pueblo (79-77) and Chadron State (74-61). Ryan Stephan leads the squad with 15.8 points per game, while Landon Vermeer is also in double-figures at 11.5 per contest.


Colorado Mesa took both games last season, with the first coming in Grand Junction as the Mavericks scored a late basket and held on for the 58-57 win. Later in the season in Silver City, CMU came away with the 78-62 victory.


WSCU (0-5, 0-2 RMAC) will then battle the Mustangs on Saturday night also at 7:30 p.m. The Mountaineers just missed out on a conference win at home this past weekend falling to Chadron State in double overtime (91-88). Mason Biddle leads three players averaging double-figures with 17.2 per game. Dominique Wright adds 11.2 and Jordan Adams with 10.8.


The teams split a season ago with each winning on their home floors. WSCU edged WNMU in Gunnison, 73-71, and then the Mustangs came back for the 88-74 win in Silver City.


WNMU will also partner with Toys For Tots both nights. By donating a new/unopened toy, the first 50 fans will receive a free drink and admission.
