GOLDEN, Colo. – In a Homecoming return for Western New Mexico University Head Football Coach
Adam Clark, the Mustangs rode into Golden and spoiled the Colorado School of Mines' Homecoming with a dominating 54-28 victory Saturday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
It started early and often for Western New Mexico University (WNMU). The defense forced an opening game three-and-out and began the drive at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) 30 following a 26-yard return by
Willie Bobbit (Downey, CA/Downey) and personal foul on CSM after the play. After the first three plays netted just six yards, on fourth-and-four the Mustangs (3-2, 2-1 RMAC) went for it and
Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) found
Marquis Sumpter (Oceanside/Falbrook Union HS) for five yards down to the 19 for a big first down. Once in the red zone, there was no stopping the Mustang charge with
Abraham Macias (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS) taking the next three rushes, one for two, seven and then 10 on third-and-one into the end zone for the 6-0 lead five minutes in as the following extra point try by
Josh McIntire (El Cajon, CA/West Hills) was blocked.
The defense again stuffed the Orediggers on their next drive, with CSM moving the ball to the WNMU 31, they would decide to go for it on fourth-and-seven, but a pass completion went for a loss of two with the tackling being recorded by
Antoine Young (Oakland, CA/Encinal HS) and turning the ball over on downs.
The offense moved right down the field with Glasmann hitting Sumpter for 15 yards and then
John De La Rosa (Vinton, TX/Canutillo HS) busted off a 13-yard scamper to the CSM 39. A pair of passes around a pair of short runs to
Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) for seven and one to Sumpter for six had the ball at the three for a first-and-goal. De La Rosa took the next snap in for the rushing score and after McIntire added the extra point it was quickly a 13-0 lead just before the end of the first quarter.
WNMU again stopped the high-powered CSM offense, getting the ball back at their 12. The WNMU offense continued to move right down the field, chewing up 65 yards on nine plays with the drive ending on a 41-yard field goal by McIntire that extended the lead to 16-0 with 10 minutes left before halftime.
CSM (3-2, 1-2 RMAC) broke through with their first points on the ensuing possession scoring on a 15-yard pass play back to quarterback
David Brown (Albuquerque, N.M./Highland ), who then fumbled at the one that was forced by
Jerrald Hines (Los Angeles, CA/), but Brown recovered the fumble in the end zone for the Oredigger touchdown to lead WNMU ahead, 16-7, with eight minutes to go before the break.
The teams would trade possessions over the next several minutes when CSM broke through again with another touchdown on six-yard passing touchdown to trim the Mustang lead to two, 16-14, with just over a minute to go before halftime.
It looked like that would be the score heading into halftime, but the high-octane Mustang offense had plenty of time to strike. After starting the drive with a 15 yard run to Macias to move the ball out to the Mustang 40, Glasmann went to work. He threw passes of 13 yards to
Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly), 19 to Macias and then a big 28 yard strike to Sumpter that went for a touchdown just that fast to move the lead back to nine, 23-14, following McIntire's extra point with 46 seconds left.
CSM tried to return the favor with a quick score of their own, but the drive stalled out near midfield and on a third-and-one, Hines collected the sack to force fourth down. The Orediggers went for it, but the pass was incomplete leading WNMU with seven seconds before halftime at the CSM 49. Glasmann ended up throwing the ball out of bounds to end the half with WNMU holding the nine point lead.
The third quarter opened with both defenses forcing punts and when WNMU got it back for their second drive of the second half, they took advantage. Faced with a third-and-three at the WNMU 26, Glasmann hit
Brent Courtney (Oceanside CA/Carlsbad HS) down the middle of the field for 43 yards down to the CSM 26. Later the drive would stall, but McIntire came through again, this time with a 43 yard field goal to move the lead to 26-14 with eight minutes to play in the third.
WNMU would then score a bunch of points over the final few minutes of the third quarter. Glasmann connected with Byrd for a lengthy 62-yard touchdown strike and after the extra point was good it became a 33-14 WNMU lead with 5:36 to play in the third.
Bernard Williams came through with the big play on defense on the ensuing Mustang defensive possession when he intercepted Brown's pass and returned in 49 yards to the CSM 26. Four plays later, Macias broke through the line with a five-yard TD run and with another extra point by McIntire the lead ballooned to 26, 40-14, with still two minutes left in the third.
The Mustang defense wasted little time striking again with a big play. On third-and-five at the CSM 16,
Dakota Furr (Lakeside, CA/El Capitan HS) came off the line with a sack and forced a fumble that was recovered by
Dylan Contreras (Litchfield Park, AZ/Peoria) at the CSM 16. Two plays later, Glasmann found Byrd for a 14-yard touchdown pass and after yet another extra point was good by McIntire it was a 47-14 lead with still 35 seconds left in the third.
The Orediggers would answer back with two touchdowns early in the fourth quarter to get within 19, 47-28, but WNMU had the answer to keep the game out of reach.
Beginning at their 25, Glasmann found Sumpter throughout while moving the ball right down field. He opened the drive with a 14 yard pass to Sumpter, then after a short one-yard pass, he found him for 27 more yards to the CSM 33. Another 10-yard strike followed and then Glasmann found two other targets, a seven yard pass to Byrd down to the 16 and after a penalty moved WNMU back to the 21, Glasmann found Courtney for a 21-yard touchdown that moved the score to 54-28 after McIntire's extra point with still seven minutes left to play.
That's how the game would end with WNMU coming away with the big victory. WNMU racked up 575 yards of total offense of 78 plays, posting 430 through the air. The WNMU defense held CSM to -19 total yards rushing and 387 yards overall.
Individually, Glasmann completed 29-of-36 for 430 yards, four touchdowns and just one interception. His main targets were Sumpter, who collected 11 for 134 yards and one touchdown and Byrd who brought down eight balls for 164 and two scores. Courtney also grabbed the other touchdown, which was one of his two receptions for 64 yards. Rushing, Macias picked up 76 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns. De La Rosa also pounded out 47 yards on 11 attempts and one touchdown.
The win snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Orediggers.
Defensively, Ceniceros led in tackles with seven. Hines had a big game, posting three sacks to go along with a forced fumble and five tackles. Williams and Deshawn Hathorne each posted interceptions.
WNMU will return home this coming Saturday when they will host Colorado Mesa University for Homecoming beginning at 1:30 p.m. inside Altamirano Field.
