SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University football team exploded for 28 points in the first half and held off a strong surge by Fort Lewis College in the second half to come away with the 42-34 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday afternoon inside Altamirano Field.
The offense went to work early and often, with Western New Mexico University (WNMU) taking their first possession right down the field after forcing Fort Lewis College (FLC) to punt after an opening possession first down. Beginning at their own 36, it didn't take the Mustangs (2-2, 1-1 RMAC) long to reach the end zone. After drawing the Skyhawks offsides on consecutive downs, Glasmann drilled
Marquis Sumpter (Oceanside/Falbrook Union HS) down the seam and he held off two defenders for the 41-yard touchdown.
Josh McIntire (El Cajon, CA/West Hills) added the extra point leaving WNMU ahead 7-0 five minutes in.
The Mustang offense didn't have to wait long before coming back on the field, as following a three-and-out, WNMU began at their 35. Following a pair of
Tyler Jackson (San Diego, CA/Ramona HS) runs that netted seven yards, Glasmann hit
Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) over the middle who broke two tackles and then out ran everyone 58 yards for the touchdown. McIntire added the extra point for a 14-0 lead midway through the opening quarter.
WNMU went right back to work on their next possession, as the defense forced another three-and-out to give the offense the ball at the Mustang 36. Byrd would end up coming away with another big play, as on third-and-nine at the FLC 42, Glasmann stepped up and found Byrd streaking again towards the end zone for another touchdown, this one 42 yards and after McIntire was good again it was 21-0 with four minutes left in the quarter.
WNMU opened the scoring in the second quarter, with the special teams scoring the touchdown. After the Mustang defense forced another three-and-out, the Skyhawks were set to punt, but the snap sailed over the punter's head all the way into the end zone.
Randy Perez (Murrieta, CA/Vista Murrieta) was there for the Mustangs recovering the fumble for a touchdown and following another McIntire extra point it was 28-0 with six minutes to play before halftime.
FLC (0-3, 0-2 RMAC) tallied a touchdown before halftime on an eight-play, 75 yard drive to leave the score 28-7 at the break.
The Skyhawks opened the scoring in the second half, scoring on just three plays spanning 35 yards to get within 14, 28-14, just three minutes into the third quarter.
The Mustangs answered right back, as on the ensuing drive they converted a big third-and-six at the WNMU 39 when Glasmann hit T.J. Sumpter for 19 yards. Four plays later,
Abraham Macias (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS) swept around the left side of the line untouched for a seven-yard touchdown run and after McIntire connected on the point after the lead was 21, 35-14.
The Skyhawks scored the only remaining points in the third quarter leaving it 35-21 in favor of WNMU heading to the fourth.
FLC got to within seven midway through the fourth quarter thanks to a nine-play, 75 yard drive that ended in a Tim Jenkins three-yard quarterback keeper to leave the WNMU lead at 35-28.
The Mustangs then rose to the occasion coming back with a pair of big plays, both on offense and defense. First the offense, which countered the FLC score with a six-play, 55 yard drive. The drive seemed stalled at the Fort Lewis 42 when Glasmann turned nothing into something when he scrambled around for several seconds and then found
Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) open down the far sideline for a 42-yard touchdown reception to move the lead back to 14, 42-28, following another McIntire extra point.
FLC refused to go away, coming back in just two minutes with an eight-play, 77 yard drive and after the point after failed it was a 42-34 game.
The Mustang defense came up big later in the quarter after the WNMU offense had to punt following an on-side kick, FLC was pinned back at their 10 with 1:59 left trailing by eight.
Jenkins went to work moving the Skyhawks down to the Mustang 27. That's when the WNMU defense came through, holding FLC to just a four-yard run and then three straight incompletions, including one on fourth-and-six near the sidelines that sealed the deal turning the ball back over to WNMU with under a minute to play.
WNMU outgained FLC, 562-453, including a solid 159-48 edge on the ground, while it was much closer through the air with FLC holding a 405-403 advantage. Macias led the rushing attack, powering for 87 yards on 23 carries and one touchdown. Glasmann threw for 403 yards, completing 25-of-39 along wth four touchdowns. He was also the second leading rusher going for 29 yards on five carries.
Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) led the receivers with 151 yards on six receptions and a pair of scores. Pompey added five catches for 71 yards and a touchdown, while
Marquis Sumpter (Oceanside/Falbrook Union HS) tallied four catches for 86 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively,
Anthony Avina (Lake Elsinore, CA/Lakeside HS) and
Zachary Dembrowski (Lake Elsinore/Elsinore HS) led the team posting seven tackles apiece.
WNMU will hit the road this coming Saturday when they will play at the Colorado School of Mines with kickoff set for 12 p.m. in Golden, Colo.
