Women's Tennis Drops Match at Division One Aggies; Open RMAC Tournament Friday

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team finished the regular season Wednesday as they fell to Division One New Mexico State University, 7-0.


NMSU (10-7) didn't drop a set to the Mustangs (7-12), but WNMU did claim a point each in doubles competition. At No. 1, Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227)/Nikolina Vukadin (Pale, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Sredwjoskolski Centar Pale) won two points but fell, 8-2. At No. 2, Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado)/Doris Berberic (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Hutt Valley High School) won a game before dropping their match, 8-1. Same for Dena Irvin (Farmington, NM/Farmington High School)/Davida Aragon (Arenas Valley, NM/Cobre High School) at No. 3 as they fell 8-1.


In singles, Tiurina battled at the top flight, taking two games in each set before falling in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Newell at No. 3 also won four games like Tiurina, before dropping 6-1, 6-3. Outside of Berberic, who claimed a game in the first set before falling 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, the Mustangs lost the other three matches 6-0, 6-0, with Vukadin falling at No. 2, Irvin at No. 5 and Erica Rasmussen (/) at No. 6.


WNMU will now prepare for the RMAC Tournament that will begin this Friday in Denver as the Mustangs are the three seed and will open against the sixth seed Colorado Christian at 11 a.m. The winner will play No. 2 Colorado Mesa/No. 7 Montana State-Billings at 5 p.m. on Friday.
