PUEBLO, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team finally saw their unbeaten streak fall as they were defeated by both Colorado Mesa and Nebraska-Kearney Saturday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
Colorado Mesa defeated WNMU (7-11, 4-2 RMAC) 7-2 in the first match, with the Mavs taking two of the three doubles matches. All three doubles matches were close, with CMU besting WNMU at No. 1 over
Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227)/
Nikolina Vukadin (Pale, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Sredwjoskolski Centar Pale), 8-6 and at No. 2 over
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado)/
Doris Berberic (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Hutt Valley High School), 9-7. The Mustangs claimed the No. 3 match, 8-6, behind
Davida Aragon (Arenas Valley, NM/Cobre High School)/
Dena Irvin (Farmington, NM/Farmington High School). In singles, WNMU won just once which came at No. 5 with Aragon winning, 6-4, 6-1. CMU won four of the five matches in straight sets, with Berberic coming close in hers at No. 4 taking her match to three sets before falling 10-0 in the final set.
In the final match against UNK, the Mustangs fell, 7-2. UNK swept doubles, winning 8-0, 2 and 3. In singles, WNMU claimed wins at No. 2 and 3. At No. 2, Vukadin won in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 and Newell won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. UNK took the other four singles matches in straight sets to claim the victory.
WNMU will conclude the regular season on Wednesday at New Mexico State before opening the RMAC Tournament back in Denver beginning on Friday.
