SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team battled both New Mexico Military Institute and the wind as the Mustangs came away with a 8-1 victory Friday afternoon at the WNMU tennis courts.
The Mustangs (1-7) took all of their doubles matches with
Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227) and
Nikolina Vukadin (Pale, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Sredwjoskolski Centar Pale) rolling at the top flight, 8-1.
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) and
Doris Berberic (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Hutt Valley High School) followed that with an 8-4 win at No. 2.
Dena Irvin (Farmington, NM/Farmington High School) and
Davida Aragon (Arenas Valley, NM/Cobre High School) helped make it a clean sweep as they took the final doubles match, 8-1.
In singles, Tiurina rolled in the first set, 6-0 and then took her match in straight sets at the top flight with a 6-3 win in the second set. At No. 2, Vukadin dropped just five games to win in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 3, Newell did almost exactly like Tiurina as she won the first set, 6-0, and then took the second set, 6-2. Berberic was the third Mustang to take a first set 6-0, as she then also won in straight sets with a 6-3 victory in the second set at the No. 4 flight. Aragon gave WNMU their fifth point in the singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6. Irvin battled at No. 5 but lost, 0-6 and 1-6.
WNMU will have a quick turnaround as they will host Eastern Arizona College on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the WNMU tennis courts. EAC defeated NMMI, 5-4, in the earlier match on Friday.
