Softball Drops Pair at Regis

Kale Gahn had two hits in the first game Saturday.
DENVER, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University softball team was held to just a run in each game as the Regis Rangers swept the Mustangs, 5-1 and 10-1 in five innings Saturday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

WNMU (11-14, 6-6 RMAC) threatened to get on the board first in game one, putting a pair of runners on with one out in the second, but a foul out and a strikeout left the runners stranded.

RU (4-12, 3-3 RMAC) then took the lead for good in the home half behind three singles and a bases-clearing double to take a 3-0 lead.

An RBI single by Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley High School) in the following inning provided the only run for the Mustangs, as they would be held to three hits over the final four innings.

Kale Gahn (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle High School) posted two hits as the designated player, while Arriel Smith (Oakhurst, CA/Yosemite High School) tossed all six innings in the circle, allowing all five runs, four earned on nine hits without a walk and one strikeout.

In game two, the Rangers scored at least two runs in every inning, including a four-run outburst in the first frame to take the lead for good.

Barnes again provided the only RBI for the Mustangs with a leadoff solo home run in the second inning.

Regis outhit WNMU 11-5, with the game ending in five due to the run-rule.

WNMU and RU will conclude their four-game set with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. Live stats will be available for both games by clicking here.
