Basketball Hits Road for Tough Stretch at Fort Lewis, Adams State

DURANGO, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University basketball teams hit the road for an important road swing through Fort Lewis College on Friday and Adams State College on Saturday.

On the men's side, WNMU (8-11, 8-7 RMAC) remains in the thick of the postseason chase, currently tied with New Mexico Highlands for sixth in the conference seeding. The Mustangs will look to take their three straight wins at home and use as momentum on the road where they will look to snap a six-game slide.

WNMU battled Fort Lewis to the end on Jan. 7 with the Mustangs rallying in the second half to defeat the Skyhawks, 63-59.

TJ Riley (Tyler, TX/Chapel Hill High School) continues to lead the team in scoring at 17.7 points per contest, good for second overall in the conference, while also leading the team in steals (41), along with 3.2 assists and five blocks. Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ/Ironwood Ridge High School) is second on the team in scoring at 15.3 per game, while also adding a team-high 6.6 rebounds, 38 blocks and 20 steals.

FLC (9-9, 7-7 RMAC) has dropped three of their last four games, with two coming at home in one-point defeats at the hands of Colorado Mines (66-65) and last time out against Adams State (70-69). They also suffered a 72-51 loss at Metro State on Jan. 20. The Skyhawks are teetering in the eighth and final spot in the RMAC Tournament holding a half-game lead over Western State.

Adams State (14-4, 10-4 RMAC) will be an even tougher test the following night, having not lost a home game entering tonight's matchup with New Mexico Highlands. Since WNMU defeated ASC in Silver City, 81-64, on Jan. 6, they followed that with a loss at New Mexico Highlands, but then defeated Colorado Mines, Colorado Christian and Regis, before dropping a tight one-point game at Metro State and then rebounded with two wins over Northern New Mexico and Fort Lewis.

The women will look to break through against a very tough Fort Lewis College team tonight. The Skyhawks, 16-2, 13-1 RMAC, have lost just one conference game which was against first-place Metro State, defeated the Mustangs, 94-48, back on Jan. 7.

WNMU (0-18, 0-15 RMAC) came close in their last road game against Chadron State, falling by 11, 81-70, back on Jan. 14. The Mustangs are 0-7 on the road this season and 0-6 inside the conference.

Kassie Scott (El Paso, TX/Coronado High School) is the only Mustang in double-figures averaging 11.4 per game, along with 3.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 19 steals and a block. Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ/Highland High School) is close as she is posting 9.5 per game, with 3.2 rebounds, 25 steals and 16 blocks.

On Saturday, they will venture to Alamosa to battle Adams State College, as they stayed with the Grizzlies throughout their first meeting before falling, 63-53.

ASC is 6-12 overall and 5-9 in the conference, but sit just a half-game out of the final spots for the RMAC Shootout. They have currently lost four straight coming into their game tonight against New Mexico Highlands.

WNMU will face Fort Lewis College tonight with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. for the women's and the men's to follow around 7:30 p.m. The schedule shifts slightly on Saturday against Adams State with tipoff set for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Live stats will be available for all games, along with live video. Mike Rowse will also be broadcasting the men's games both nights.
