COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Finishing up a two-day trip of playing Division I teams, the Western New Mexico University women's tennis team battle the United State Air Force Academy Sunday with the Falcons coming away with the 7-0 victory.


In singles action, Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227) won a total of six games before Melissa Cecil won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 at the top flight. Christine Molina defeated Nikolina Vukadin (Pale, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Sredwjoskolski Centar Pale) at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1. The same score happened at No. 3 with Tahlia Smoke defeating Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado). Hannah Dake downed Doris Berberic (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Hutt Valley High School) at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 5, Ali Rizvi defeated Dena Irvin (Farmington, NM/Farmington High School), 6-1, 6-0. Marcelli Magday defeated Davida Aragon (Arenas Valley, NM/Cobre High School) at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0.


In doubles competition, Vukadin/Tiurina took two games from Cecil/Smoke but fell, 8-2 at the top flight. Dake/Rizvi downed Newell/Berberic at No. 2, 8-1. At No. 3 Tran/Molina defeated Irvin/Aragon, 8-1.


WNMU will return to action when they will host New Mexico Military Institute at the WNMU tennis courts on Thursday, Mar. 1 at 11:30 a.m.
