ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team battled hard but fell to Division I New Mexico, 7-0, Saturday afternoon.


In singles competition, Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227) almost took a set at her top flight match before falling to Michaela Bezdickova, 0-6, 5-7. Susanna Kuuttila defeated Nikolina Vukadin (Pale, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Sredwjoskolski Centar Pale) in straight sets after Vukadin took two games in the first set, 6-2, 6-0. At No. 3, Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) did just like Vukadin as she took two games in the first set before Kristin Eggleston won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Katie Wookey won at No. 4 over Doris Berberic (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Hutt Valley High School), 6-0, 6-0. Davida Aragon (Arenas Valley, NM/Cobre High School) tallied a pair of points in her second set, but fell in straights to Michaela Oldani, 0-6, 2-6. Erica Rasmussen (/) came away with a point in both the first and second sets, but Laura Richardson was too much at No. 6 winning, 6-1, 6-1.


In doubles, Tiurina/Vukadin came close, but fell to Oldani/Nikolina Grbac at No. 1, 8-6. Newell/Berberic grabbed three games from Bezdickova/Kuuttila, but fell, 3-8. Maria Sablina/Eggleston defeated Aragon/Dena Irvin (Farmington, NM/Farmington High School) at No. 3, 8-1.


WNMU will remain on the road as they will head up interstate 25 to play the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs on Sunday morning.
