SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University football team got back to within three late in the third quarter, but Black Hills State University scored the next nine points on their way to defeating the Mustangs, 36-24, Saturday afternoon at Altamirano Field on Senior Day.
Both teams traded possessions before Black Hills State University (BHSU) went on a lengthy 15 play, 90 yard drive that took 6:35 off the clock and ended with a five-yard touchdown run by quarterback Ward Anderson for the early 7-0 lead with four minutes to play in the opening quarter.
On the next Western New Mexico University (WNMU) drive,
Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) was sacked on a third-and-15 and in the process, he fumbled which was recovered by the Yellow Jackets (2-7, 2-6 RMAC) and returned 35 yards by Thadd Stottler for the touchdown to increase the lead to 14-0 with still three minutes to go in the first quarter.
WNMU (4-6, 3-5 RMAC) quickly answered, coming away with a big play on third-and-eight at their 29. Glasmann had plenty of time to throw and he sailed a perfect pass down the middle of the field to
Marquis Sumpter (Oceanside/Falbrook Union HS) who caught it in stride and went 71 yards for the touchdown.
Josh McIntire (El Cajon, CA/West Hills) made the extra point leaving BHSU ahead, 14-7, with still some time left in the first.
The game would move into the second quarter when the Mustangs began a long drive that started from their two. They would convert five third downs and would move the ball to the Yellow Jacket 15. After a seven-yard pass to Sumpter and then an incompletion, a rush of six moved the ball back to the 14 forcing a fourth-and-nine. McIntire came on a made the 32-yard field goal to cap a 21 play, 84 yard drive that took 8:13 off the clock and had the Mustangs within four, 14-10, with six minutes to go before halftime.
Each team would still have a say before halftime with BHSU coming back on their next drive thanks to a 49-yard pass play to Jerome Krysl and later they would score on a one-yard touchdown run by Anderson to increase the lead to 21-10 with under four minutes to play before the half.
WNMU still had time and they moved down the field. They came through on a big fourth-and-one at the BHSU 36 when
Abraham Macias (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS) rushed for 17 yards down to the 19. After a dropped pass, Glasmann hit Sumpter for a 19-yard strike and after McIntire made the extra point it was a 21-17 game heading into halftime.
WNMU received the ball to start the second half and the Yellow Jacket defense came away with a big interception on a pass by
Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) that was picked off by Austin Hayes at the WNMU 12 and returned to the 19. BHSU took advantage of the momentum going 81 yards on just six plays in 2:37 when Anderson hit Krysl for the seven-yard touchdown pass. The extra point failed leaving BHSU ahead, 27-17, with 10 minutes left in the third.
The teams would trade possessions when the Mustang offense began to move the ball following a 16-yard punt return by
Willie Bobbit (Downey, CA/Downey) that moved the ball out to the WNMU 43 with still five to go in the third.
WNMU would pick up a pair of third downs with Glasmann hit Terron Sumpter for an 11-yard pass on third-and-six that moved the ball to the BHSU 27. Then on a third-and-three, Macias broke through the middle for nine yards to the BHSU 11. After a few plays moved the ball to the one, Macias took the second-and-goal carry in for the touchdown and after McIntire made the extra point it was 27-24 in favor of BHSU with a minute to go in the third quarter.
After the WNMU defense stopped BHSU at the Mustang five to turn the ball over on downs, BHSU returned the favor stopping the Mustang offense on three plays to force a punt and get the ball back out near midfield. This time, WNMU would once again stop the Yellow Jackets at the WNMU nine, but this time BHSU went for the field goal and made it from 28 yards out to extend the lead to six, 30-24, with seven minutes to play in the game.
WNMU would then have a pair of turnovers on their next two drives, first out at their 40 on a fumble following a pass reception. BHSU was unable to move the ball against the WNMU defense again forcing a punt. On the next drive, Glasmann was again under pressure and was sacked back near the 10 by Randall Hill and the ball came loose that was recovered by Sterling Boylan and returned eight yards for the touchdown. The Yellow Jackets would try for two, but the rush failed leaving them ahead 36-24 with four minutes to play.
WNMU would move the ball out to their 40 on the ensuing drive, but they were only able to move the ball two yards in four plays forcing the turnover on downs.
BHSU would run the clock on their next drive forcing WNMU to use a pair of timeouts and after the Mustangs got the ball back, they moved it out near midfield but were unable to go any farther turning the ball over on downs ending the game with BHSU winning by 12.
BHSU outgained WNMU by just five, 431-426, with both teams throwing for over 300 yards as WNMU threw for 330 and 301 for BHSU. Turnovers were the big story with WNMU committing four to zero for BHSU.
Macias led the WNMU ground attack going for 74 yards on 21 carries and one touchdown. Glasmann threw the ball 54 times, completing 34 for 330 and two touchdowns.
Marquis Sumpter (Oceanside/Falbrook Union HS) had a big senior day collecting 11 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. The defense was led by fellow senior Bernard Williams who had nine tackles, six solo.
