SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University basketball teams will look to get on the winning track this weekend as they host a pair of tough opponents in Adams State and Fort Lewis this Friday and Saturday inside Drag's Court.
On the women's side, ASC (4-7, 3-4 RMAC) is coming off of a tight four-point victory against Chadron State on Dec. 31 and before that defeated Nebraska-Kearney by 10, 68-58.
On the road this season, the Grizzlies have collected only one victory, defeating Oklahoma Panhandle State in the season opener, 104-79.
Chloe Cable and Caitlin Boal lead the team in scoring, as both average in double-figures, with Cable collecting 13.6 per game to 11.0 for Boal. Cable also leads the team in rebounds at 8.2 per contest.
ASC won both games last season defeating WNMU in Alamosa, 79-66 and later in Silver City, 70-52.
It will only get harder for the Mustangs the next night as No. 6 Fort Lewis will pay a visit.
The Skyhawks have won seven straight entering their game against New Mexico Highlands Friday night. After a few close calls to begin the conference slate, FLC (10-1, 7-0 RMAC) has dominated with wins of 24 over Western State, 34 over Chadron State and this past Saturday of 25 against Nebraska-Kearney.
Dana Schreibvogel leads the team posting a 16.2 points per game clip, while Jamie Simmons adds another 10.4 per game. Simmons leads the team in rebounding, collecting 6.4 per game.
The Skyhawks took two games last season from WNMU, winning in Durango, 86-27 and again in Silver City, 87-60.
WNMU (0-11, 0-7 RMAC) are led by
Kassie Scott (El Paso, TX/Coronado High School)'s 11.6 per game, along with
Morgan Wohltman (Queen Creek, AZ/Highland High School)'s 10.9 a game. Opponents are shooting over 45 percent (45.2) from the field, while WNMU is connecting at a 35.1 percent clip.
On the men's side, ASC (9-1, 6-1 RMAC) have reeled off two straight victories with their only loss coming at Colorado Mesa, 81-64. The past two games, the Grizzlies have defeated Nebraska-Kearney (88-68) and Chadron State (105-81).
Jack Osborn leads ASC posting a 13.7 points per game and 6.1 rebounds a contest. Marquis Richards chips in 12.2 per game, while Robby Hanzlik (11.7) and Deray Wilson (11.2) are also in double-digits.
Last year, the teams split games, with each winning on the other teams' floor. In the first matchup in Alamosa, ASC took the game, 103-96, and then the Mustangs took the game in Silver City, 85-76.
FLC (7-4, 5-2 RMAC) erased a halftime deficit last time out to defeat Nebraska-Kearney in Durango, 83-71. The Skyhawks also defeated the other team from Nebraska the night before against Chadron State, 56-43.
FLC is on a three game winning streak, having defeated Western State, 75-65, the game before. The two losses inside the conference have come against Adams State (67-62) and Colorado Mesa (69-53).
Matt Morris leads the team in points (12.5) and rebounds (9.9) per game, with Matt Billups (9.8) and Torrey Udall (9.7) the next closest in scoring.
Last season, FLC defeated the Mustangs in Durango, 103-61, as that game was played after WNMU had played several games already during the week. WNMU returned the favor later in the season in Silver City, winning in overtime, 93-88.
WNMU just missed out pulling the upset over No. 12 Colorado Mines last time out losing by a point, 70-69.
TJ Riley (Tyler, TX/Chapel Hill High School) powers the way for WNMU (3-9, 3-5 RMAC) as he is one of the top scorers in the conference at 15.8 per game, while also adding 4.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists and 24 steals.
Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ/Ironwood Ridge High School) (13.9) and
Lucio Luttrell (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces High School) (10.3) also average in double-figures to round out the top three in scoring.
WNMU shoots just over 40 percent (40.5) from the field, while opponents are hitting at nearly a 44 percent clip (43.9). From three-point range, WNMU is connecting at 36.4 percent to 35.3 for opponents.
WNMU and ASC will tipoff Friday night with the women's game beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. The same schedule will follow on Saturday against FLC.
