It was an up-and-down sort of day for the Mustangs Friday. WNMU was forced to move to the lower bracket of the RMAC Softball Tournament because of a 5-2 loss to Adams State in the morning. The Mustangs then moved on in the tournament with a win over Mesa State, 7-4, knocking the Mavericks out of the tournament before they, themselves, were knocked out by Colorado Mines, 5-0.
In the first game of the day, two costly errors in the top of the second gave Adams State a 2-0 advantage. WNMU tied things up on their at-bat but left the bases loaded. The Mustangs continued to make mistakes in the game, allowing a single run in the third, sixth, and seventh and giving WNMU their first loss of the tournament.
Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ/Mesa High School) threw for seven innings. She posted three strikeouts, eight hits, and two earned runs.
WNMU mustered up only four hits in the loss.
Aimee Vasquez (Ruidoso, NM/Ruidoso High School),
Davina Flores (Tucson, AZ/Catalina High School),
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley High School), and
Ashley Gonzales (Queen Creek, AZ/Queen Creek High School) all posted one hit. Gonzales recorded the team's only RBI.
The errors continued against Mesa State with three, but the bats woke up when it was important. The Mustangs had at least one hit in each inning to total 11.
Kale Gahn (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle High School) got her first hit of the game in the top of the second with a homer to left field.
Mesa State tied the game in the fifth, but WNMU had a big fifth inning, brining four across the plate.
Ashly Eichenberger (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon High School) recorded three RBIs with her three-run double with one out. Gahn added another RBI with a single up centerfield.
Both teams tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth with Mesa State adding another in the seventh. With two on the bags,
Sarah Byrne (Glendale, AZ/Cactus High School) ended the game like Robles did yesterday with a strikeout looking. Byrne fanned six batters and walked only one. She also gave up only one earned run.
Like the previous two games, the Mustangs committed too many errors, and like the first game of the day, the bats were extremely cold. WNMU had four mistakes and only one hit. Mines, on the other hand, nine hits to record five unanswered runs.
The Mustangs end their season at .500 (29-29) with a 23-15 RMAC mark.
