WNMU Moves On, Faces Adams State

Junior Bri Robles
CSU-Pueblo came close to seventh inning comeback, but WNMU pitcher Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) got the third out to leave two stranded on the bags. WNMU held on for the 6-5 victory to advance to the quarterfinals of the RMAC tournament. WNMU will take on Adams State Friday at 12:30 p.m. in Golden, Colorado on the campus of the Colorado School of Mines. The Grizzlies entered the tournament as the sixth seed.

The Mustangs went down early in the game after the ThunderWolves registered an inside-of-the-park homerun in the top of the first. Both teams were limited in their offense over the next four innings because each team's solid defensive plays, but the Mustangs finally strung together three hits in the fifth and another three in the sixth for six runs to take the 6-1 lead.

In the seventh, the ThunderWolves benefitted from an error and two walks to cut the Mustang lead to 6-3 with two outs. A two-run single through the left side then brought the score within one. Robles came through with the final out to sit the ThunderWolves down with two runners left on the bases.

First baseman Sarah Byrne (Glendale, AZ, Cactus High School, New Mexico State University) was 2-for-4 at the plate and brought in three runs. Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School) stepped up in the designated hitter position with two hits and one RBI.

Robles, who pitched the complete game, had four strikeouts and four walks. Three of the walks came in the final inning.
