Mustangs Fall In Two Heartbreakers

Junior Bri Robles
WNMU and Metro State were neck and neck Saturday as both games were decided in the final inning. In the first game, the Roadrunners scored all of their runs off of homeruns, including the game winner in the bottom of the 11th inning. The marathon took two hours and 20 minutes and ended with Metro State winning, 7-4. The second game didn't go into extra innings, but the Roadrunners had three hits and a fielder's choice to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to win, 2-1.

In game one, Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) recorded the loss for the Mustangs. She is now 8-14 overall. She pitched the entire game and recorded five strikeouts, four walks, 10 hits, and five earned runs.

Robles gave up one run in the first and three in the third before allowing the three runs in the 11th. The Mustangs, on the other hand, took their time getting their runs on the board with a single run in the third, fifth, sixth, and seventh. Neither team did much in the extra innings – even the bottom of the 11th saw two straight outs from Metro State. Robles then allowed two straight singles before the homer over centerfield.

In the second game, Metro State and WNMU's pitching and fielding squad did their part. WNMU went to the batter's box only 26 times while Metro State only faced the pitcher 24 times.

Down by one, the Mustangs evened the score in the top of the fifth after three hits. Kale Gahn (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle High School) recorded the RBI.

Metro State went 1-2-3 over the next two innings, but their bats woke up in the seventh to win the game and take the sweep.

Arriel Smith (Oakhurst, CA, Yosemite High School) pitched 6.1 innings, striking out three batters and allowing only one walk.
