The Mustangs capitalized on three Nebraska-Kearney errors on Friday afternoon to bring in four unearned runs and take the victory in game one, 10-7. They then almost squandered a 4-0 lead in game two but homer in the eighth to take the victory, 5-4.
The Mustangs finally broke the .500 mark in conference play to move to 13-11. Overall, they are still slightly behind the even marking at 17-23. The Lopers are 9-22 overall with all nine wins coming in RMAC action.
In game one,
Sarah Byrne (Glendale, AZ, Cactus High School, New Mexico State University) led the Mustangs with three hits and three RBIs. Four others recorded two hits. The team is now 6-1 when they score 10 or more runs.
Down 5-3 heading into the fifth inning, Davi
Davina Flores (Tucson, AZ, Catalina High School, Central Arizona College) reached on an error by Kearney's third baseman.
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) then singled to the infield, allowing Byrne the chance to knock one out of the park. WNMU took the lead, 6-5.
The top of the sixth started like the fifth. The Lopers committed a crucial error with WNMU's first batter,
Aimee Vasquez (Ruidoso, NM, Ruidoso High School). Another error followed two batters later, which led to three more runs.
The Lopers tacked on a homer in the bottom of the sixth, and then both teams added a solo run in the seventh.
WNMU scored four runs in the second inning of game two and then was quiet after that. Meanwhile, Nebraska-Kearney connected with two runs in the fourth and another two in the bottom of the seventh. All four runs were courtesy of homeruns.
Finally, the Mustangs posted a homerun of their own when it counted the most. With two outs,
Kale Gahn (Phoenix, AZ, Pinnacle High School) posted a one-run homer.
Relief pitcher Byrne posted three straight strikeouts in the bottom of the eighth the end the game.
