The Mustangs sit on top of the RMAC West Division standings with a split over second place Mesa State. WNMU took the first game, 7-2, and then went down, 6-0, in the second game to fall, 8-3.
WNMU is now 21-15 in conference action with a 25-27 record overall. The Mavericks are 20-16 in the RMAC with a 22-19 marking on the season.
In game one,
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) recorded her 46th RBI of the season in the top of the third with her single to right center that brought in
Courtney Graf (El Paso, TX, Coronado High School) from second.
Sarah Byrne (Glendale, AZ/Cactus High School) then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in
Aimee Vasquez (Ruidoso, NM, Ruidoso High School) who reached on a bunt.
Mesa State cut the lead in half on their at-bats, but WNMU posted one run in the fourth off of a throwing error by the Mavericks' first baseman. A controversial bat call in the fifth caused a Mesa State protest. They tried to build off of their fury and tripled up right center to bring in one run.
WNMU was also fueled. In the top of the sixth,
Ashly Eichenberger (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon High School, Central Arizona College) recorded her 14th homerun of the season for two runs, and Vasquez helped two more across the plate.
Barnes finished game one with three hits and one RBI.
Ashley Gonzales (Queen Creek, AZ, Queen Creek High School, Scottsdale Community College), Eichenberger, and Vasquez finished with two hits.
Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) recorded the win in the pitching circle. In the complete seven inning game, she had seven strikeouts and seven walks, allowing five hits.
Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) started game two throwing the ball but was taken out after no outs in the second inning. She allowed three earned runs and three unearned scores.
Arriel Smith (Oakhurst, CA, Yosemite High School) closed out the second and threw the remaining four, but neither threw a ball in the zone for a strike. Smith, however, gave up only two runs.
Vasquez continued her solid hitting, posting two hits on four at-bats. The three Mustang runs came courtesy of a three-run homer from Barnes in the top of the third.
