It is now a three-way battle for the homerun hitter of the year. On Friday,
Sarah Byrne (Glendale, AZ, Cactus High School, New Mexico State University) hammered four homers to post 12 on the year. She trails
Ashly Eichenberger (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon High School, Central Arizona College) by one and is one ahead of
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School). Byrne's homeruns helped the Mustangs take two victories over Fort Lewis, 5-1 and 15-5.
Byrne went 3-for-3 in game one and brought in two RBIs.
Pitcher
Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) pitched the entire seven innings and waved four and walked three. The lone Skyhawk run was in the top of the sixth with one out, the bases loaded, and a single to centerfield. With the bases still loaded, Robles made a heads-up play. She fielded a routine ground ball in the pitching circle and tossed it to Barnes, who stepped on home plate. Barnes then threw it to first base for the double play and a sigh of relief.
In game two, Byrne took on the role of pitcher and heavy hitter. She went 3-for-4 at the plate and struck out three batters. She finished the game with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to post her second through sixth RBI of the game.
Barnes was 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. The Mustangs had 15 hits in the second game but also committed four errors.
