Errors Prevent Saturday Sweep

Junior Bri Robles
The Mustangs easily muscled their way through the first game against Chadron State Saturday to finish the game in four and a half innings and walk away with an 8-0 win. The second game wasn't quite so easy. WNMU committed four errors and gave up four unearned runs. The Eagles edged past the Mustangs, 6-5.

Up 1-0 after one inning, the Mustangs put a dagger into the Eagles in the second inning after Ashly Eichenberger (Scottsdale, AZ, Horizon High School, Central Arizona College) nailed a grand slam over the centerfield fence. WNMU added two more runs in the third and another in the fourth to end the game early.

Pitcher Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) allowed only three hits in her complete game. WNMU posted 11 hits and one error.

Eichenberger went 3-for-3 at the plate and had three putouts and two assists.

Chadron nearly had a grand slam of their own in the top of the second in game two. With runners on first and third, both because of errors, Brittany Chacon belted the ball out of the park for three runs.

WNMU took the lead in the third with six hits and four big runs, but Chadron quickly tied the game at four in the fourth inning after three singles to the outfield.

Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ/Benson High School) got things going again for the Mustangs in the bottom of the inning with a double to centerfield. Davina Flores (Tucson, AZ/Catalina High School) then tripled to right field to bring Batten in. The Mustangs, once again, had the lead.

The lead didn't last long though. Chadron's first batter of the inning, Katie Bolin, homered to knot the game for the second time.

A botched rundown by WNMU on a fielder's choice in the sixth led to Chadron's game winning run in the sixth. With one out and a runner on second, Angela Jay hit a fielder's choice to third base. What looked like an easy rundown play turned into a challenge when Courtney Graf (El Paso, TX, Coronado High School) couldn't hang onto the ball at second base. Eventually, the second base runner made it home to take the lead and win away from the Mustangs.

Robles recorded the loss after relieving Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) in the sixth inning. Robles had four strikeouts in her two innings.
