The Mustangs just couldn't put runs on the board Sunday. In the first game, WNMU was thankful New Mexico Highlands didn't capitalize on a bases loaded situation as well as four others left stranded throughout the game. WNMU took the win, 2-0. Then it was all Cowgirls in game two, allowing only two Mustangs to come across the plate, 10-2. WNMU is now 1-12 when they score 0-2 runs a game.
The Mustangs combined for nine hits over the two games. In the six-inning loss, they committed three errors, which gave up three unearned runs.
Pitching,
Bri Robles (Mesa, AZ, Mesa High School, Phoenix College) recorded her 10th win of the season while
Emily Huhta (Albuquerque, NM, Manzano High School, Lamar Community College) posted her fourth loss.
WNMU stays above the .500 mark in conference play with a 16-14 record. They are 20-26 overall. Highlands is now 8-35 overall with a 5-27 RMAC mark.
In game one, the only two runs of the game were posted in the fifth when
Jessica Jayo (Peoria, AZ, Centennial High School) and
Ashley Gonzales (Queen Creek, AZ, Queen Creek High School, Scottsdale Community College) connected with back-to-back singles up the middle. A bunt, coupled with a wild pitch and a fly, scored the pair.
The Mustangs were down by seven going into the sixth inning of game two. Finally, Gonzales scored the first Mustang run with a leadoff homer.
Kaitlynn Barnes (Phoenix, AZ, Deer Valley High School) then singled up the middle to bring in
Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School), who reached on a single.
